General Surgeon/Surgical Oncology Academic Surgeon

The Department of Surgery, Alberta Health Services-Calgary Zone and University of Calgary, invites applications for a Contingent Term academic position at the Associate Professor or Professor level. The successful applicant will hold a primary appointment in the Department of Surgery.

Qualifications include an MD or equivalent, an active surgical Fellowship in the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC) in General Surgery or Surgical Oncology and eligibility for licensure in the Province of Alberta. The successful candidate will have an established academic interest in research and/or education in addition to clinical practice. The successful candidate will practice at one of the four adult hospitals in Calgary (Foothills Medical Centre, Peter Lougheed Centre, Rockyview General Hospital and South Health Campus) and/or at the Alberta Children’s Hospital.

Candidates are expected to hold a research or education focused graduate degree (PhD or Masters). A track history in receiving research funding from peer-review national granting agencies and/or national recognition of teaching excellence is preferred. Candidates should have at least 25 peer-review publications on clinical, education and research topics in their specialty in the previous five years or the equivalent in educational productivity and program development over that time. Effective teaching, supervision of learners and graduate students and mentorship is valued, and established academic engagement/leadership is required. Applicants should include how their current research and teaching goals/activities aligns with the University of Calgary’s Eyes High Strategy (https://www.ucalgary.ca/eyeshigh/strategy) in their research interest statement and teaching philosophy. An international reputation of excellence in research or education, and academic leadership is essential for this position.

Applicants at the Associate Professor level must present evidence of an established, externally funded (at the level of Tri-Council or equivalent peer reviewed National/International organization) research program, a strong publication record as evidenced by continuous publication in high ranking journals, or leading journals in the field or present evidence of established educational leadership in teaching (including receipt of educational awards and prizes), demonstrated innovation in educational approaches and have a record of service in education, development and evaluation of educational materials and programs. Applicants should show evidence of successful teaching and/or graduate supervision, and evidence of established academic engagement in professional and other communities.

Applicants at the Professor level must provide evidence of a continuous, and external (at the level of Tri-Council or equivalent peer reviewed National/International organization) funded and well-established research program, outstanding academic publication record as evidence by continuous publication in high impact journals or leading in the field, and demonstrated ability to lead research teams or evidence of leadership and design of education programs (direction of a major education portfolio, a position of responsibility in the delivery of education or service in a leadership role in education), high quality teaching contributions (including invited presentations at national or international level and the receipt of educational awards and prizes), clear innovation in educational approaches, a leading role in the development, delivery, service or evaluation of educational materials and/or programs. Applicants should show evidence of an outstanding teaching and/or graduate supervision record, and evidence of academic service and/or educational leadership.

The successful individual will have an appointment with the University of Calgary, Cumming School of Medicine, Department of Surgery, Sections of General Surgery and Surgical Oncology. They will be expected to become an active member of at least one of the research institutes in the Cumming School of Medicine and/or make a substantial contribution to the educational mandate of the department and to the wider research and education culture of the Cumming School of Medicine.
