Academic Interventional Cardiologist Canada Research Chair (Tier I)

The Departments of Cardiac Sciences and Community Health Sciences in conjunction with the Centre for Health Informatics, the Libin Cardiovascular Institute and the O’Brien Institute for Public Health, Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary, invite applications from outstanding clinician-scientists for a Canada Research Chair (Tier I) position in Digital Health for Precision Medicine. The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of Professor (with tenure) and will be nominated for a CIHR Tier 1 Canada Research Chair. Further information about the Canada Research Chairs Program can be found on the Government of Canada’s CRC website, including eligibility criteria. This position has at least 60% protected time for research with the remaining 40% time for clinical service, leadership, and educational activities.

The successful candidate will hold an MD and have completed an accredited training program in Cardiology and Interventional Cardiology with additional subspecialty expertise in complex PCI, structural heart procedures (TAVR), and intracoronary imaging techniques (IVUS, OCT). Qualifications also include a PhD with a preference of focus in biostatistics, data science, epidemiology, and informatics. The successful candidate will have academic qualifications commensurate with an appointment at the rank of Professor and will have an internationally recognized research program in health informatics, health data science, health machine learning/artificial intelligence, digital health, and mobile health. The candidate will have a strong track record in building collaborative research teams. The candidate will have a minimum of 10 years of clinical expertise in interventional cardiology procedures, over 150 peer-reviewed publications, and an H-index over 50.

Clinical responsibilities will include outpatient and inpatient practice. As well, there will be both daytime and overnight responsibilities for in-patient general cardiology clinical services, as well as ambulatory care consultative opportunities. The extent of clinical services can be adjusted according to the academic expertise and career path of the applicant.

The interests of the successful candidate should align strongly with the strategic research priorities of the Centre for Health Informatics, the O’Brien Institute for Public Health and Libin Cardiovascular Institute and the Cumming School of Medicine’s strategic plan, including the Precision Medicine/Precision Public Health initiative ( The candidates’ interests should also align with the University of Calgary’s university-wide strategic research plan ( Excellence in health informatics or health data science is essential for success of the Precision Medicine/Precision Public Health initiative. Therefore, the successful candidate will play a leading role in realizing the Cumming School of Medicine’s goals of Precision Health and Precision Public Health.

This position has an attractive remuneration and benefits package. In addition, this position includes office space and access to the facilities and infrastructure within the state-of-the-art Centre for Health Informatics (CHI) ( located within the Cumming School of Medicine. The Centre brings together leaders from academia and industry in health informatics and health data science research to address key questions in improving population and public health and enhancing health systems. This dynamic Centre includes an active training program led by leaders in health informatics research, high-performance computing infrastructure, and ready access to many provincial health data assets.
