Academic Family Physician - Clinician Investigator

The Department of Family Medicine (www.calgaryfamilymedicine.ca) in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary invites applications for an Academic Family Physician - Clinician Investigator, Contingent Term appointment at the Assistant Professor or Associate Professor level. Joint appointment may be provided in the Department of Community Health Sciences (http://www.ucalgary.ca/communityhealthsciences/ ).

The position provides 50% protected time for research, and will also include clinical care in family medicine in the Department of Family Medicine’s academic teaching clinics (40%) and teaching in undergraduate and postgraduate education (10%). Clinical work in the academic teaching clinics will include teaching and supervision of undergraduate medical students and residents in the Family Medicine Residency Program. Teaching experience in an academic setting is an asset.

Qualifications include a MD degree, certification from the College of Family Physicians of Canada or equivalent, eligibility for licensure through the Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta and for privileges with Alberta Health Services. A Master’s degree or PhD in a relevant field or equivalent research training is preferred. Research interests must align with the priorities of the University of Calgary and the 2015-2020 Cumming School of Medicine strategic plan (http://cumming.ucalgary.ca/deans-office/strategic-plan), as well as at least one of the Department of Family Medicine’s research pillars: Indigenous Health, Health Services, Health Equity, and Medical Education. Applicants at the Assistant Professor level should demonstrate a record of impactful peer-reviewed publications, including publications as first or senior author. They should have a track record of peer-reviewed funding relevant to Family Medicine at the local and, preferably, national level. Future success in receiving external funding at the level of Tri-Council or equivalent peer reviewed National/International organization should be a realistic goal. In terms of education and teaching, applicants at the Assistant Professor level must show evidence of successful teaching activity and supervision and/or mentorship of trainees, undergraduate or graduate students. Applicants must also be able to demonstrate engagement with professional and other communities.

Applicants at the Associate Professor level must present evidence of an established, externally funded (at the level of Tri-Council or equivalent peer reviewed National/International organization relevant to Family Medicine) research program, and an impactful publication record as evidenced by continuous publication in journals relevant to Family Medicine, including as senior or first author. Applicants must show evidence of successful teaching and/or graduate supervision, and evidence of established academic engagement in professional and other communities.
