Academic Cardiologist – Cardiologist, Heart Rhythm Specialist, Health Economist

The Department of Cardiac Sciences, Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary and the Libin Cardiovascular Institute and O’Brien Institute for Public Health invite applications for a Cardiologist, Heart Rhythm Specialist and Health Economist. The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure track).

Qualifications include an MD, completion of an accredited training program in Internal Medicine, Cardiology with advanced training in clinical heart rhythm disorders, and formal training in Health Economics and Evaluation. It is expected that the applicant has achieved training in Health Economics and Evaluation at the Masters or Doctoral level. The successful candidate is expected to be eligible for RCPSC certification and CPSA licensing. This position has 50% protected time for research with 40% time for clinical service and 10% educational activities.

The Department of Cardiac Sciences aims to recruit an early career academic electrophysiology cardiologist with expertise in health economics and precision medicine. The Libin Institute has made research using human health data a high priority with significant investments in accessibility of clinical data to enable clinical service delivery innovations and enhance value in our healthcare system. Toward this aim, the Institute will support and enable targeted recruitments in the area of big data and for this request, health economics. This specific recruitment will allow an early career academic to conduct rigorous applied health economics research to inform sustainable health policy and improve the quality of care and health outcomes in populations of people with cardiovascular diseases. We anticipate a high impact within the Calgary zone for the larger provincial landscape.

Clinical responsibilities will include outpatient and inpatient practice. As well, there will be both daytime and overnight responsibilities for in-patient general cardiology clinical services, as well as ambulatory care consultative opportunities. The extent of clinical services can be adjusted according to the academic expertise and career path of the applicant.

The interests of the successful candidate should align strongly with the strategic research priorities of the Centre for Health Informatics, the O’Brien Institute for Public Health and Libin Cardiovascular Institute and the Cumming School of Medicine’s strategic plan, including the Precision Medicine/Precision Public Health initiative (https://cumming.ucalgary.ca/sites/default/files/teams/19/policies-forms/stratplan1-9-15.pdf). The candidates’ interests should also align with the University of Calgary’s university-wide strategic research plan (https://www.ucalgary.ca/eyeshigh/roadmap). Excellence in health informatics or health data science is essential for success of the Precision Medicine/Precision Public Health initiative. Therefore, the successful candidate will play a leading role in realizing the Cumming School of Medicine’s goals of Precision Health and Precision Public Health.

This position has an attractive remuneration and benefits package. In addition, this position includes office space and access to the facilities and infrastructure within the state-of-the-art Centre for Health Informatics (CHI) (https://cumming.ucalgary.ca/centres/centre-health-informatics) located within the Cumming School of Medicine. The Centre brings together leaders from academia and industry in health informatics and health data science research to address key questions in improving population and public health and enhancing health systems. This dynamic Centre includes an active training program led by leaders in health informatics research, high-performance computing infrastructure, and ready access to many provincial health data assets.
