The University of Manitoba invites applications for a Canada Research Chair (CRC) Tier 2, a tenured or tenure-track position at the rank of assistant or associate professor, in the area of Food Protein Processing. This appointment is contingent on a successful CRC Tier 2 application.
The Government of Canada has established the CRC program to enable Canadian universities to foster world-class research excellence. The proposed CRC aligns with the University's Strategic Research Plan that identifies Safe, Healthy, Just and Sustainable Food Systems as a targeted area.
The CRC Tier 2 in Food Protein Processing will join the Department of Food and Human Nutritional Sciences of the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences, which promotes a collaborative and supportive workplace and is committed to advancing the University of Manitoba as a leader in food systems research. The Chair position will be involved in current faculty-led initiatives related to food protein research, such as wet and dry protein processing, plant breeding for improved protein quality and quantity, food protein structure and function, novel natural health products, and quality proteins for human nutrition. Novel infrastructure, including well-established laboratories, a government-approved dairy processing plant, a food pilot plant, as well as facilities located at the Richardson Centre for Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals (RCFFN), Canadian Centre for Agri-Food Research in Health and Medicine (CCARM), and Food Development Centre (FDC), are available to the Chair to facilitate the development of a world-class program in Food Protein Processing.
The successful candidate will be expected to develop an innovative and respected research program related to Food Protein Processing. The potential areas of focus may include: 1) protein extraction technologies; 2) protein fractionation techniques; 3) food protein modification via physical, chemical or biological approaches; 4) thermal and non-thermal processing technologies; and/or 5) protein utilization in food formulations and human nutrition. The Chair will maintain a primary focus on agricultural commodities derived from the Prairie Provinces, including those derived from crops (e.g. oilseeds, cereals, legumes) and/or livestock (e.g. dairy, eggs, meat). The Chair will be expected to contribute to provincial and national strategies aimed at enhancing protein utilization in Western Canada. In addition to CRC funding, the successful candidate will be expected to secure additional funding from provincial and national sources early in the tenure of the Chair. The Chair will have a reduced teaching and service load, but is expected to contribute to both undergraduate and graduate teaching in areas related to food and protein science.
The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. with specialization in food science or related fields, and a proven success in scholarly activities, including evidence of established expertise in food protein processing and a demonstrated potential to become a world leader in their research field. The successful candidate must have a highly productive track record of published peer-reviewed articles, and a record of successfully mentoring highly qualified personnel such as undergraduate and graduate students.
A Tier 2 CRC Nomination will be submitted in the fall 2019. Chairs are awarded by the Tri-agency Institutional Programs Secretariat after a rigorous evaluation. The appointment will be conditional on a successful Canada Research Chair nomination and application.
Applicants must be exceptional emerging scholars with less than 10 years of experience as an active researcher since obtaining their terminal degree at the time of nomination. Tier 2 Chairs are valued at $100,000 per year for 5 years with an option to renew once. Applicants who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree (and where career breaks exist, such as maternity, parental or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc.) will have their eligibility for a Tier 2 Chair assessed through the program's Tier 2 justification process.
