Assistant/Associate Professor, Ecosystem Services Under Climate Change

The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure-track) or in exceptional cases as an Associate Professor (with Tenure).

Qualified applicants are expected to conduct research on that relates broadly to the theme of Ecosystem Services under Climate Change. This can include work focused on individual species or communities where their functioning is important to ecosystem services, or research that is primarily theoretical or aimed at methods development. We particularly encourage applications from candidates that use data and modelling intensive approaches and would be comfortable contributing to teaching courses on statistics and data science. This is a dry lab position; we particularly encourage applicants who leverage new data streams and analytical tools (e.g., machine learning, remote sensing) to study how biodiversity drives delivery of ecosystem services (e.g., carbon sequestration, mitigation of heat extremes, air and water quality, land reclamation). The ideal candidate will focus on agricultural, industrial or urban landscapes, and improve our teaching and research capacity in key areas in which progress depends on big data and computational approaches (e.g., evolution, genomics)

The applicant is expected to establish a vibrant and internationally recognized, externally funded research program in the broadly defined area of Ecosystem Services under Climate Change, as well as provide excellent, innovative education for undergraduate and graduate students. The successful candidate will assist in meeting the institutional goals outlined in the recently developed “Framework for Growth” and in the strategic plan of the Faculty of Science. The “Framework for Growth" is centered around three big ideas that will differentiate our entrepreneurial university and drive growth: transdisciplinary scholarship, deeper community partnerships, and future-focused delivery of programs that will see us expand the flexibility and customizability of the UCalgary experience. The successful candidate must possess a PhD or M.D. (or equivalent science degree) in Biology or related disciplines and postdoctoral experience in ecology, data science or related disciplines.

Applicants at the Assistant Professor rank must have a strong publication record demonstrating excellence in Ecosystem Services Under Climate Change. Prior success in obtaining peer-reviewed funding is an asset. Candidates must also demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching and learning and the use of contemporary approaches to teaching

The successful candidate at the Associate Professor rank must have a strong track record of publications in high quality journals in Ecosystem Services Under Climate Change, as well as evidence of securing ongoing external research funding. They must also have demonstrated effectiveness in teaching at the University level that utilizes contemporary approaches to teaching, and evidence of effective graduate student supervision.

The successful candidate will be expected to engage in service activities, as appropriate.
