The Okanagan School of Education (OSE), located in Kelowna, BC, is part of the Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia (UBC). The School invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant/Associate Professor in the Educational Leadership stream in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) with attention to the inclusion of the arts – humanities, language arts, dance, drama, music, visual arts, design and new media (STEAM). This position is expected to start July 1, 2021 (or as negotiated with the successful candidate). UBC is one of the world's leading universities, and is consistently ranked in the top 40. The University has two distinct campuses, one in Vancouver and one in Kelowna. UBC's Okanagan campus, located in the city of Kelowna on unceded Syilx Okanagan territory, has strong undergraduate and graduate programs, with over 10,000 students in seven faculties.
The minimum qualification is a completed doctoral degree in a field directly linked to STEM/STEAM education and teacher education. Applicants are required to demonstrate an outstanding record of achievement in teaching and leadership in at least two areas that comprise STEM/STEAM education. A strong background in K-12 school and university teacher education contexts is expected. Other requirements include: conducting practitioner-focused research to support the development of innovative STEM/STEAM teaching practices; experience developing curriculum materials and familiarity with the BC curriculum; and experience integrating technologies into teaching practices. A shared commitment to the priorities, goals, and objectives of the OSE Strategic Plan, investing in the ongoing development of a scholar-practitioner community is required. Evidence of experience with teaching appropriate graduate courses and mentoring of graduate students informally or formally including serving on their supervisory committees as well as supervising Teaching Assistants (TAs), Graduate Academic Assistants (GAAs) or Research Assistants (RAs) will be an added advantage. The appointee must have knowledge and experience in the development, coordination, and day-to-day operations of STEM/STEAM interdisciplinary and collaborative teaching, which includes an understanding of inquiry-focused teaching associated with learning environments, teamwork, and safety requirements.
A tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor of Teaching annual workload includes a teaching assignment of courses scheduled over the academic year in combination with significant educational leadership opportunities, such as curriculum development and innovation, equivalent to a total of 24 credits. The appointee will be expected to provide leadership in the area of STEM/STEAM education and teacher education. Specifically, the appointee will teach undergraduate and graduate education courses and discipline specific courses in teacher education, contribute to other teacher education courses according to expertise, teach in the School’s professional certificate and diploma programs, and liaise with professional and community groups interested in STEM/STEAM education. In addition to English, proficiency in French and/or another language is desirable. Evidence of excellence in teaching is required, as demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, teaching evaluations, strong letters of reference, and other materials submitted as part of the application. Preference will be given to applicants with familiarity with the BC educational context and public school teaching experience. Additionally, teaching and research capacities in one or more of the following areas: additional content/disciplinary expertise; Indigenous teacher education; research methodologies; teaching English as an additional language; social justice; Black studies, and gender studies are considered an asset. The appointee will also contribute to the service work of the School, the Faculty of Education, the University and the broader academic community.

This is a tenure-track position in the Educational Leadership stream. The successful candidate is, in later years, reviewed for reappointment, tenure and promotion in accordance with the UBC Collective Agreement.
