The University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) invites applications for a Tenure-Track position in Geotechnical Engineering within the School of Engineering at the rank of Assistant Professor, with a proposed starting date of January 1, 2023. This position is within the recently created School of Engineering at UNBC (https://www.unbc.ca/engineering). The successful candidate will be a team player and join a cohesive and dynamic group of established and junior researchers in engineering, will teach relatively small undergraduate and graduate classes, and will enjoy many excellent opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration.
The successful candidate’s initial focus will be establishing and delivering foundational engineering courses in civil engineering, such as Soil Mechanics, Foundation Design, Geotechnical Engineering, Geoenvironmental Engineering, and Rock Mechanics, as well as developing a research program. Priority will be given to candidates whose academic preparation and work experience is closely related to geotechnical engineering in northern settings, including cold climate issues. The successful applicant will be a key contributor to the development of Environmental and Civil Engineering at UNBC and help to shape the curriculum for both the undergraduate and graduate programs while exploring sustainable design challenges for the future. The successful candidate is expected to establish an outstanding independent program of research with relevance to small and remote communities and resource industries in Northern British Columbia. The ability to supervise senior undergraduate and graduate students in research projects as well as establish industrial/community partnerships will be critical. Experience and aptitude for interdisciplinary collaboration in teaching and research with other disciplines, as well as experience and interest in community design projects would be a benefit.
Applicants for this position must hold a PhD in Civil Engineering or a related field of study, and have a growing record of scholarly activity, as well as present evidence of and commitment to teaching excellence. For this position, we seek an individual who has or is eligible to obtain licensure as a Professional Engineer in British Columbia. Applicants will preferably have post-doctoral and/or industrial experience.
