Assistant Professor - Elementary Mathematics Education and Child Study

The Department of Applied Psychology and Human Development (APHD) at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position at the rank of Assistant Professor with a specialization in Elementary Mathematics Education and Child Study. The appointment will commence on July 1, 2022 or shortly thereafter.

Candidates must have completed a doctoral degree Psychology, Education, or a closely related discipline, in a field closely related to the area of specialization, by the date of appointment or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. We seek applicants who have demonstrated research and practical expertise in mathematics learning and education. The successful candidate will be a researcher/educator with a demonstrated strong theoretical understanding of how children learn mathematics as well as the practical experience needed to transform this knowledge into evidence-based, equitable and accessible mathematics educational practice. This position requires a strong understanding of children’s mathematical development, and of how teachers can support that development, drawing upon a child study lens. The research program of the successful candidate will emphasize children’s mathematical development and include a strong research focus in two or more of the following areas: the design, implementation, and evaluation of school-based mathematics interventions/curricula; neural, cognitive, and educational contributors to mathematics learning; emotional factors related to mathematics teaching and learning (e.g., math anxiety); teacher Professional Learning; assessment of mathematics learning and development; educational/school policy related to mathematics education; STEM education; integration of the science of learning and mathematics education.

We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and enhance our existing departmental strengths. In adherence to our departmental goals, candidates must demonstrate a strong track record of engaging in interdisciplinary research that seeks to better integrate psychological research and educational practice. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence which can be demonstrated by a record of high-quality publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, the submitted research statement, and strong endorsements from referees of high standing.

Candidates must have the demonstrated ability to combine disciplinary expertise with innovative, effective teaching methods that enhance the excellence and foster the diversity of their academic community. Evidence of excellence in university teaching must be clearly demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier (with required materials outlined below) submitted as part of the application, as well as strong letters of reference. In addition, application materials must demonstrate a candidate’s capacity for collegial and administrative service, preferably by providing evidence of the development of policies, processes, and/or resources for the effective functioning of administrative systems within an academic environment.

The successful candidate will contribute to the delivery of both core and interdisciplinary curricula within and across APHD programs. This will include teaching mathematics education courses to Master of Arts students in the Child Study and Education program. The candidate will also contribute to the development and ongoing commitments of the Robertson Program for Inquiry-Based Teaching in Mathematics and Science. The successful candidate is expected to be familiar with the Ontario Ministry of Education’s Kindergarten Program and Grades 1-8 Mathematics Curriculum. This position requires the successful candidate to work within a K-6 graduate level teacher certification program and thus prior experience or training in Canadian K -6 education is advantageous. A familiarity with child-centered, inquiry-based educational practices and/or experience supporting early math development via intervention would also be assets.
