About the Position:

Applications are invited for an entry-level permanent full-time tenure track position at the level of Assistant Professor in the Institute for Environmental and Interdisciplinary Science at Carleton University. We are interested in candidates with a background in applying data analytics and data science approaches to interdisciplinary fields. Interdisciplinary Science and Practice (ISAP) is a new undergraduate science program within the Institute for Environmental and Interdisciplinary Science focused on enhancing skill sets in science communication, community engagement, and synthesis of multiple forms of knowledge to inform policy and management. Applicants must be able to teach core undergraduate courses in the ISAP program in the realm of data science, open data and ethics, data analytics and their applications, and evidence synthesis. This position will augment existing teaching and research strengths within the Institute, and provide research leadership consistent with an evidence-based approach to science communication, policy, and practice.

About the Academic Unit:

The Institute for Environmental and Interdisciplinary Science (https://carleton.ca/ieis/) is a student-centred undergraduate teaching unit with close connections to a variety of Departments including Math, Computer Science, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Physics, Health Science and Geography, all of which have vibrant graduate programs. Although the primary appointment would be with the Institute, the successful applicant would be cross-appointed to one or more Departments based on their research expertise. The curriculum in the Institute is innovative and involves many opportunities for undergraduate students to participate in understanding and solving real-world problems through field courses, practicum courses and group projects.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. and demonstrated excellence and commitment to teaching and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate-level students. In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to develop an externally funded research program in interdisciplinary science. Research topics of particular interest include but are not limited to data science, data analytics and modeling, evidence synthesis, meta-analysis, decision support tools (such as structured decision making), and open data in the context of science application such as in health or the environment. Applicants with the ability to forge collaborations with members of the Institute and interdisciplinary-oriented faculty across the university, as well as with allied agencies, will be given preference.
