Assistant Professor in Biological Anthropology

The Department of Anthropology at the University of Victoria invites applications for a tenure-track appointment in the area of Biological Anthropology. The appointment, effective July 1, 2020, will be made at the rank of Assistant Professor. Candidates must have a PhD in hand by start date.
We seek a colleague who has demonstrated excellence in effectively teaching a diverse undergraduate student body and robust potential for graduate teaching and mentoring in a manner that facilitates participation of students diversified by gender, ethnicity and other social locations; has demonstrated evidence of strong scholarship in the form of publications and has an outstanding record of research achievement that contributes to the diversity of research and methodological perspectives in the discipline; an active or well-formulated plan for a continuing research program; a demonstrated ability or strong potential to attract external research funding; and potential for involving students in research.
We seek an individual whose research and teaching interests will contribute strength primarily towards our “Evolution and Ecology” and/or “Inequality, Culture, and Health” program themes with research that focuses on human or primate diversity, evolution, and/or health, and complements but does not duplicate current faculty strengths (faculty profiles: https://www.uvic.ca/socialsciences/anthropology/people/faculty/index.php). Examples of possible specialties include but are not limited to human/primate evolutionary biology, life history, evolutionary energetics, social determinants of health, developmental origins of health and disease, primate behavioural ecology, and/or paleoanthropology. The successful candidate will contribute to the success of the new BSc Anthropology program as well as the current BA, MA, and PhD programs through undergraduate and graduate teaching with a strong skill-based focus. Applicants must be able to teach introductory biological anthropology. The ability to teach methods-based courses and a breadth of biological anthropology courses will be a strong asset.
The four-course (1.5 unit each) per annum teaching commitment comes with the expectation that the successful candidate will be actively engaged in research and graduate student mentoring. Supporting administrative work in the department and contributing to the collegial, collaborative, and respectful work environment are also part of this role.
