The School of Community and Regional Planning at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver campus, invites applications for a tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. The successful applicant should demonstrate the ability to lead the concentration in Indigenous Community Planning (ICP) ( within the School's Master in Community and Regional Planning Program (

A PhD or, in an exceptional case, equivalent professional qualification in planning or a related discipline, as well as experience working with Indigenous communities is required. Also required is promise in establishing a distinguished research and publication record in the areas of Indigenous Community Planning and Indigenous/State relations. Knowledge of the history and cultures of Indigenous peoples in Canada would be an asset, as would knowledge of and experience with Comprehensive Community Planning in British Columbia, and the legal and political landscape of Indigenous governance and planning in Canada. In addition to substantive strengths in Indigenous community planning, we are looking for candidates able to apply Indigenous ways of knowing to research and practice in planning.

The successful candidate will be expected to transition into leadership of the ICP concentration, maintain an active program of research, supervise one ICP Practicum, teach core ICP or SCARP courses and provide service to the University and the broader academic and professional community.

SCARP is a fully accredited (Canada and USA) graduate planning program within the Faculty of Applied Science. It is unique in Canada for having a long-standing partnership with the Musqueam First Nation in the design and delivery of the ICP concentration within the Masters program. The Musqueam First Nation established a Memorandum of Affiliation with UBC in 2006 for the purposes of developing a reciprocal relationship. UBC has an established undergraduate program in Critical Indigenous Studies, which encompasses First Nations Studies and Endangered Languages. UBC also has an Indigenous Strategic Plan ( The ICP concentration is now in its seventh year and has 33 graduates. The School also has internationally recognized strength in scholarship in this field.

More generally SCARP is internationally recognised for the excellence of the teaching and research and for leading thinking in planning around more inclusive ways of delivering socially, economically and environmentally just outcomes. Given the deepening challenges facing vulnerable communities across the globe, the School is committed not just to generating new knowledge, but of evolving the theory and practice of how knowledge can frame action and help facilitate positive change. Faculty, students and alumni, through their research and practice, have already made significant contributions to this end, but we appreciate that there is much more to be done.
