Assistant Professor, Indigenous Gender Diversity and Sexuality Studies

York University

The School of Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, York University invites highly qualified candidates to apply for a professorial stream tenure-track appointment in Indigenous Gender Diversity and Sexuality Studies at the Assistant Professor level, to commence July 1, 2023. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval.

The area known as Tkaronto has been care taken by the Anishinabek Nation, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, and the Huron-Wendat. It is now home to many First Nation, Inuit and Métis communities. This territory is subject of the Dish with One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, an agreement to peaceably share and care for the Great Lakes region. A PhD by July 1, 2023 in Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies or Indigenous Studies or related interdisciplinary fields or PhD equivalent (e.g., Masters with a substantial record of creative, professional and/or research experience) is required, with a demonstrated record of excellence or promise of excellence in research and in teaching. Applicants should have a clearly articulated program of research or research creation, and specialize in one or more of the following areas: Indigenous critiques of gender and sexuality; decolonial gender and sexuality; Indigenous cultural production and knowledges; Indigenous sexual health; Indigenous gender expression; revitalizing Indigenous sexualities; gender, sexuality, and Indigeneity; Indigenous feminisms; gender Indigeneity. Applicants must have experiential knowledges, and on-going relationships and connections with Indigenous communities in their teaching and research. These may include on-reserve, rural, urban, queer, or activist Indigenous communities, among others.

The successful candidate will be expected to engage in outstanding, innovative, and, as appropriate, externally funded research or research creation at the highest level. Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence or promise of research excellence of a recognized international caliber as demonstrated in: the research statement; a record of publications (or forthcoming publications), presentations at major conferences, or other forms of knowledge dissemination; evidence of sustained community engagement; awards and accolades; and strong recommendations from referees.

The position will involve graduate teaching and supervision, as well as undergraduate teaching and the successful candidate must be suitable for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. Evidence of excellence or promise of excellence in teaching will be provided through: the teaching statement; teaching accomplishments, mentorship, and pedagogical innovations, including experience in non-institutional contexts; teaching evaluations; and strong letters of reference.
