About the Position:

The Institute of Interdisciplinary Studies’ (IIS) Program in Human Rights and Social Justice (HRSJ) invites applications from qualified candidates for a tenure-track appointment in the area of Precarity in Work and Labour at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning July 1, 2021. More specifically, we are seeking a candidate whose research and teaching expertise focuses on precarity in work and labour in relation to Indigeneity and/or Blackness.

The candidate must demonstrate a strong record of teaching and research in the human rights and social justice dimensions of the political economy of precarity. Preference will be given to applicants who take an anti-colonial/decolonial and anti-racist approach, in which the logics of race, gender and class are woven together to clarify human rights and social justice issues pertaining to precariousness. Applicants should show evidence of teaching and research expertise focusing on economic sectors that disproportionately rely on BIPOC work and labour. The successful candidate will support the ongoing effort to develop a graduate program in Human Rights and Social Justice which will include precarity as one of its major streams.

Qualifications:

The position requires a candidate with a Ph.D. in the social sciences or humanities including in Sociology, Women’s and Gender Studies, History, Cultural Studies, Geography, Critical Black Studies, Indigenous Studies or a closely related field with a strong emphasis on human rights and/or social justice. Preferred candidates will possess evidence of excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level, a commitment to engaged pedagogy, and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment. The candidate will have strong track record of high-quality research output that demonstrates potential for independent research scholarly research. Lived experience in racialized, Indigenous, or Black communities will be a major asset.

About the Academic Unit:

IIS is the home of two interdisciplinary programs of study: HRSJ; and Childhood and Youth Studies. IIS brings together faculty and students from across the campus who share research interests that cut across traditional disciplinary boundaries in the arts, social and natural sciences.

The HRSJ at Carleton University provides an overview of historical and contemporary human rights issues and their impact on human lives in different cultural contexts. The program offers students an opportunity to critically examine the various strategies and mechanisms that have been used nationally and internationally to address these issues, including social movements, domestic legislation, international statutes, and human rights declarations and conventions.
