The Program in Linguistics at Saint Mary’s University invites applications for an eight-month contractually limited term appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, to commence
September 1, 2022.

1 Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have completed a Ph.D. in linguistics or a very closely related field and will have a demonstrated ability to teach linguistics effectively at the undergraduate level, particularly in areas relevant to the courses listed below. Applications will also be considered from candidates who are ABD and close to completing a Ph.D. in linguistics if they have relevant teaching experience. Candidates should also have a record of scholarship in linguistics or a closely related field. Applications from candidates who can contribute to the Indigenization and/or decolonization of the University and its curriculum are particularly welcome.

2 Duties

The primary responsibility of the successful candidate will be to teach a standard load of 2.5 full course equivalents (FCE) at the undergraduate level, to be selected from the courses listed below in consultation with the Program Coordinator. Upon mutual agreement with the Program Coordinator and an honours student, they may also supervise an undergraduate honours thesis in Linguistics. The successful candidate will also be expected to hold regular office hours, to engage in scholarship, and generally to be an active member of the Linguistics Program and of Saint Mary’s University.


The successful candidate will teach a standard load of 2.5 FCE, selected from the following courses:

• LING 1200 – Introduction to Linguistics (1.0 FCE; 2022–23)

This is a full-year course, taught over two semesters. It can be split between two instructors, with one teaching the fall term and the other the winter term, or the whole course can be taught by a single instructor.

• LING 2309 – Phonetics (0.5 FCE; fall 2022)

• LING 4512 – Topics in Applied Linguistics (0.5 FCE; fall 2022)

The specific topic for this course for fall 2022 has not yet been set. Candidates interested in teaching this course are encouraged to provide a brief proposal for a topic.

• LING 2340 – Semantics (0.5 FCE, winter 2023)

• LING 4422 – Topics in Linguistic Theory (0.5 FCE, winter 2023)

The specific topic for this course for winter 2023 has not yet been set. Candidates interested in teaching this course are encouraged to provide a brief proposal for a topic.
