The McGill University Department of Microbiology and Immunology and the Faculty of Dentistry are seeking to recruit an outstanding tenure-stream faculty member at the rank of Assistant Professor. The selected candidate will be offered a joint appointment in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Dentistry.
The Department of Microbiology and Immunology ((https://www.mcgill.ca/microimm/) conducts multidisciplinary research in diverse areas including cellular and molecular immunology, virology, bacteriology, mycology, and parasitology. The Department’s research mission is to generate new knowledge to understand the pathogenesis of infectious and immunological conditions and translate these findings into improvements for human health.
The Faculty of Dentistry has a strong record of international interdisciplinary research in 4 clusters:
• Pain and Neuroscience (https://www.mcgill.ca/dentistry/research/research-clusters/pain-and-neuroscience),
• Biomaterials, Nanobiotechnology and Tissue Engineering (https://www.mcgill.ca/dentistry/research/research-
• Mineralized Tissues and Extracellular Matrix Biology (https://www.mcgill.ca/dentistry/research/research-
• Population Oral Health (https://www.mcgill.ca/dentistry/research/research-clusters/population-oral-health) including Oral Microbiology and Microbiome research, which is an area the Faculty wishes to expand.
The successful applicant will have opportunities to collaborate with a large and diverse community of researchers at McGill University and its affiliated hospitals within the newly launched McGill Interdisciplinary Initiative in Infection and Immunity (MI4: https://www.mcgill.ca/mi4/). MI4 brings together over 200 investigators to accelerate the development and implementation of innovative solutions for infectious and immune threats to human health.
The selected candidate will be expected to conduct world-class independent research, successfully compete for external grant funding and contribute to a dynamic training environment at McGill.
Successful applicants will be expected to:
• Develop a well-established, competitive, and internationally recognized research program in microbiome studies
or mucosal immunology as applied to oral health in collaboration with existing research programs in the
Department of Microbiology and Immunology and the Faculty of Dentistry.
• Conduct rigorous, externally funded independent research programs.
• Demonstrate a commitment to maintaining and enhancing excellence in undergraduate and postgraduate education.
• Independently acquire sufficient funds to support the training of graduate students at the MSc and PhD level in the Faculties of Medicine and Dentistry.
• Disseminate research findings through peer-reviewed publications and other knowledge translation and exchange activities.
• Be actively involved in all aspects of academic life (teaching, supervision of a diverse group of students,
participation in academic and administrative committees).
Qualifications and Education Requirements
Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent in Microbiology and Immunology or a related field and at least three years of postdoctoral research training. A strong record of research/scholarly activity will be considered as an asset.
Scientists with expertise in microbiome studies or mucosal immunology as applied to oral health are particularly encouraged to apply. Applicants with a research program focused on other aspects of microbiology or immunology with relevance to oral health will also be considered.
