Assistant Professor, Physics.

Job Summary:

The Faculty of Applied & Technical Studies invites applications for an Assistant Professor, Physics. The successful candidate will be expected to teach a variety of courses in physics from 1st year to 4th year. The physics courses cover topics in mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, fluids, waves and optics, quantum mechanics, solid state physics, statistical physics, computational physics, and experimental physics.

The Physics Department at UFV currently offers Physics Honours, Major, and Minor programs within the BSc. The department also offers a 1st year engineering transfer program and an advanced diploma program in Engineering Physics (specialising in Mechatronics), as well as a few service courses (such as algebra-based physics, and astronomy) to other program students.
We seek applicants who share our passion for, and commitment to, excellence in undergraduate teaching in a student-centered environment; who successfully integrate their scholarship into their teaching; and who are experienced in the delivery of high-quality service in communities of practice, particularly in the Physics and Engineering disciplines. The candidate must be able to interact effectively with other areas, programs, departments, and external partners, such as Math & Stats, Computing Science, the Technology departments, and the skilled Trades.

As a teaching-oriented institution and department, we are seeking a collegial, energetic and innovative individual who has successful teaching experience at the undergraduate level and who communicates effectively with students both in and out of the classroom; can instruct across a range of undergraduate courses offered by the department; and can contribute to the development and renewal of the Physics curriculum. An ability to teach across traditional disciplinary boundaries and to contribute Indigenous perspectives to the curriculum and to the department would be an asset. Experience teaching international students is an asset as UFV is committed to supporting and engaging international students.

Experience and interest in developing innovative learning strategies including problem-based learning methods are highly desirable. Willingness to learn technology-supported teaching (e.g., hybrid and on-line) is required. The successful candidate will show aptitude for working in teams and an interest in innovative inter-disciplinary teaching.

Applicants will have a strong record as a practitioner, commensurate with their experience; demonstrated ability to lead design and problem-solving programs; and an ability to develop and transfer their experiences into learning opportunities for students.
The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to advancing the state of professional practice through inquiry and scholarship.

The successful applicant will be expected to actively participate in departmental activities, service, events, and initiatives. A commitment to an ongoing program of professional development is required.


Required qualifications for this position are:

• A PhD in physics or a closely related field, from a recognized post-secondary institution.
• An extensive knowledge of undergraduate physics, with the ability to properly communicate that knowledge to students.
• Minimum 2 years teaching experience at the undergraduate level with recent evidence of teaching excellence.
• Experience in designing and teaching undergraduate experimental courses will be highly desirable.
• Strong communication, leadership, and service skills.
• Familiarity with technology-supported teaching (e.g., hybrid or online) will be an asset.
• The potential for scholarly activity.
