Founded in 1910 and located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Mount Royal University grew into a vibrant college in the 1930s and became a mid-sized university in 2009. Currently, more than 15,000 credit students choose from 13 bachelor degrees and 38 majors.
About the Faculty of Arts and the Department of Humanities
In addition to the Department of Humanities, the Faculty of Arts houses the following departments: Economics, Justice & Policy Studies, English, Languages & Cultures, Interior Design, Psychology, and Sociology & Anthropology. Arts currently offers the following degrees: Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Arts—Criminal Justice, and Bachelor of Interior Design.
The successful candidate will be a member of the Department of Humanities. The Department of Humanities currently offers a BA in History and a minor in Religious Studies, as well as minors in Ancient and Medieval Studies, Art History, Canadian Studies, Humanities, Indigenous Studies, Linguistics, Philosophy, and Women’s and Gender Studies.
About the Role
The Department of Humanities invites applications for a tenure-track position in Religious Studies at the rank of Assistant Professor, effective 1 January 2023. A completed Ph.D. in Religious Studies and relevant experience in undergraduate teaching is required. This position is open to candidates who study contemporary lived religion, including ethnographic studies. A focus on any religion or group of traditions is welcome, including Indigenous traditions, new religious movements, esotericism, and the major religions.
The department currently offers a minor in Religious Studies. The successful applicant will be able to teach introductory courses in religion, and to develop and teach upper-level courses in their area(s) of specialization. The ability to develop and teach one or more thematic courses relating to religion would be a strong asset. Examples of thematic areas include (but are not limited to) race/ethnicity, women, gender and/or sexuality, ritual and performance, art and aesthetics, environment, politics, science, space and place, economics of religion, pop culture, or material culture. Mount Royal University is seeking candidates with strengths in teaching and learning.
New faculty at MRU are hired into one of two work patterns. The teaching/service pattern (TS) has a focus on teaching and service, and comes with a 4/4 teaching load. The teaching/scholarship/service pattern (TSS) has a focus on teaching and service, with the requirement that the faculty member also be involved in a research program, and comes with a 3/3 teaching load. The average class size is 33 students. The work pattern for this position is TSS.
