In December 2018, Jack Anderson and Wynne Chisholm gifted the University of Calgary a 19,000 acre, 1000 head cow-calf ranch. In support of this generous donation, the University of Calgary, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (UCVM) invites applications for three tenure-track faculty positions at the Assistant Professor level to further develop and support the research themes at the WA Ranches. Research themes will be applying a One Health approach to animal health and welfare, as well as focusing on the interface among human, animal and environmental health. All positions include a commitment to teach, conduct research and engage in professional and university service. Successful candidates will join an established team of cattle researchers and educators and will be essential to development of an internationally recognized Beef Centre for Excellence. W.A. The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Calgary invites applications for an Assistant Professor (Tenure-track), Beef Health Ecology, WA Ranches.
This position will focus on understanding animal health at the domestic livestock-wildlife interface in a ranching environment, with goals of simultaneously advancing sustainable livestock production and environmental stewardship. Therefore, a One Health approach to research is expected. Expertise in wildlife disease ecology, experience in collaborative multidisciplinary projects and appreciation for integrative approaches to beef health at the livestock-wildlife interface, will be an asset. Ability to collaborate with government, non-government, national industry and academic partners is expected.
A DVM degree (or equivalent), as well as a PhD or equivalent in animal ecology or epidemiology (animal science or related field will also be considered). Excellence in scholarly research and potential to establish an independent research program is essential. This position is primarily a research appointment (60-70%); furthermore, ~30% of the appointment will involve instruction in the DVM curriculum and the remaining 10% will involve departmental and university service. The successful candidate will develop an independent, innovative, extramurally funded research program and supervise graduate students.
UCVM has approximately 70 faculty members, 130 staff, 125 DVM students, 110 graduate students, 25 post-doctoral fellows, and 15 advanced clinical trainees. The DVM program at UCVM provides a comprehensive general veterinary education to approximately 30-32 students per year, with a class expansion anticipated bringing class size to 50 students per year. The program is an integrated core-elective program, with enhanced educational opportunities in defined areas that combine discipline-based courses with extensive on-campus and off-campus experiential learning. UCVM is a research-intensive faculty with expanding research, graduate education, and advanced clinical trainee programs.
