Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) - Cardiovascular Epidemiology

The School of Population and Public Health in partnership with the Southern Medical Program (SMP) within the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia (UBC), invites applications from candidates in the field of Cardiovascular Epidemiology, for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. The successful candidate will also hold an Investigator appointment within the Faculty of Medicine’s Centre for Chronic Disease Prevention and Management (CCDPM). The position will be located at UBC Okanagan Campus.

School of Population and Public Health (SPPH)
SPPH is a research-intensive unit that also has a strong emphasis on education. SPPH is home to approximately 65 primary faculty members and 350 graduate students whose research interests align with four divisions: Epidemioloy, Biostatistics & Public Health Practice; Health in Populations; Health Services and Systems; and Occupational and Environmental Health. There are also several areas of emphasis that cross-cut more than one division, such as global health, ethics, and research methodology. SPPH provides training for undergraduate, graduate, and post-professional students across multiple programs, including PhD and MPH degrees.

Centre for Chronic Disease Prevention and Management (CCDPM)
CCDPM is a newly established Faculty of Medicine Centre, forged from a vision to establish an internationally recognized, interdisciplinary program of research and knowledge translation for the prevention and management of chronic conditions. The Centre’s research strategy builds on the collective research strengths of the UBC Okanagan campus, Interior Health, and local clinicians in three key areas: Cardiovascular Health, Diabetes and Obesity, and Neurological Disorders.

Reporting to the Director of SPPH in consultation with the Regional Associate Dean, Interior, the successful candidate will be expected to engage with an interdisciplinary team to develop a program of research and knowledge translation, focused on epidemiology as applied to the prevention and management of cardiovascular disease. The successful candidate will also be expected to engage with community, including members of Indigenous and rural communities and to be involved in the translation/implementation of their scientific innovations into practice. The successful candidate is expected to participate in the teaching activities of the SMP and SPPH, as well as provide mentorship and training to undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate learners. As well, the incumbent will be expected to provide service to the CCDPM, SPPH, the University and the broader academic and professional community.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated evidence of ability in scholarly activity and knowledge translation, in the area of cardiovascular epidemiology as it broadly applies to cardiovascular disease prevention and/or management. Examples of relevant research programs may include (but are not limited to):
 research to identify risk factors and treatments for cardiovascular disease incidence, morbidity and mortality;
 research to identify mechanisms of cardiovascular disease;
 research to identify new biomarkers and genetics of cardiovascular disease;
 research on the primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in a relevant field (e.g., epidemiology, biostatistics, health research methodology, computational biology); demonstrated potential to attract external research funding; demonstrated ability for knowledge translation; demonstrated evidence of ability in teaching and graduate student mentorship; and demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and interact with empathy, understanding and respect of diverse and divergent perspectives and behaviours.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
