Tenure Track Position in Indigenous-focused Child & Youth Care Practice
The School of Child and Youth Care (CYC) in the Faculty of Community Services at Ryerson University in the city of Toronto on the traditional territory of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee and Huron invite applications for a tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor commencing July 1, 2020, subject to final budgetary approval. The area of specialization is Indigenous-focused child & youth care practice.
Ryerson’s Truth and Reconciliation Community Consultation Report (see below) has recommended immediate action be taken to increase the number of Indigenous scholars at the University. In this hiring process, the School of CYC is therefore inviting applicants in the spirit of this recommendation.
The School of Child & Youth Care consists of 10.5 tenure-stream faculty members and approximately 800 undergraduate and graduate students. The School focuses on teaching emerging child and youth care practitioners and emerging scholars in the field of child and youth care. The curriculum provides for three streams of learning: a therapeutic practice stream that includes internship components, a research stream and a professional identity stream. There is a growing focus on the experiences of marginalization of Black Youth, Indigenous Youth, young people identifying as 2SLGBTQ+ and young people with disabilities in systems such as child welfare, child & youth mental health, education, health care and community-based services. Pedagogically, the curriculum draws on professional practice experience in the role of child and youth care practitioner on the part of instructors and faculty members on the one hand, and critical engagements with systems, structures and power on the other hand. The faculty in CYC prides itself on the excellence of its research and on the quality of its teaching.
The School is interested in candidates who will contribute to our existing research, teaching and/or community service strengths by bringing innovative and diverse perspectives and experiences to the work.
This position falls under the jurisdiction of the Ryerson Faculty Association (RFA) (www.rfanet.ca).

The successful candidate will engage in a combination of teaching, research and service duties, maintaining an inclusive, equitable, and collegial work and learning environment across all activities. Responsibilities will include teaching and student supervision at the undergraduate/graduate levels; developing a strong research program that is externally funded and contributes to community engagement and impact, the reputation of the School and quality of practices in the professional field of child & youth care; and engaging in the life of the School, Faculty and University through service activities.
Candidates must hold a doctorate with a clear research and/or teaching focus on Indigenous children and youth and the historic and ongoing impact of colonization on Indigenous Peoples. Candidates who are all-but-dissertation (ABD) and are very close to completion will also be considered. In addition, the successful candidate must present evidence of:
● a strong commitment to Indigenous knowledges, teaching frameworks (e.g. seven sacred teachings, cultural safety, etc.), research practices and methodologies and developing curriculum;
● a record of collaboration with Indigenous communities and organizations;
● demonstrated commitment to values and practices of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion and decolonization as it pertains to service, teaching, and scholarly research or creative activities, including a demonstrated ability to make learning accessible and inclusive for a diverse student population;
● commitment to undergraduate and graduate education in child & youth care in any area of scholarship in keeping with the focus of the program, from an Indigenous perspective;
● a record of effective teaching (i.e., cultural/land-based learning activities, learning in community, course evaluations, testimonials, and related documentation);
● professional experience with Indigenous children, youth, families and communities, preferably using cultural safety practices;
● strong emerging scholarly research, creative projects or Indigenous community engagements that are active, innovative and impactful resulting in achievements such as public policy contributions, presentations at significant conferences, community healing, peer reviewed and non peer reviewed publications, working papers, book chapters, and awards and accolades, and other noteworthy activities that contribute to Indigenous communities, truth and reconciliation and the visibility and prominence of the discipline; and
● an ability to contribute to the life of the School, Faculty and the University through collegial service.
Preference will be given to Indigenous scholars with lived experiences and a strong commitment to Indigenous knowledges and methodologies, and who have extensive experience in collaborating with Indigenous students, organizations and communities.

● a statement of teaching philosophy (up to 2 pages) and incorporation of Indigenous values and frameworks for teaching; short-listed candidates will be asked to submit a teaching dossier;
● one sample of recent scholarly work; and
● names of three individuals who may be contacted for references.
