The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, within the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and the BC Cancer Research Institute (BCCRI) invite applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE) faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure track). The successful applicant will also hold a concurrent appointment as a Scientist at BCCRI.
This position is located within a health-care facility. Therefore, this position requires successful verification of full vaccination against COVID-19 provided prior to the start date, as required by the provincial health mandate.
The UBC Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is a hybrid, academically intensive Department within the UBC Faculty of Medicine whose activities span a broad spectrum of teaching, research, and academic service, often performed in the milieu of clinical practice, and are ultimately devoted to improving the care, treatment, and well-being of patients. The Department offers academic degrees at the bachelor’s (Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLSc)) and graduate (MSc, PhD) levels with the graduate program, one of the largest in the Faculty of Medicine, which has been recognized by UBC for its quality. The Department plays a major role in the MD undergraduate program and offers an accredited residency-training program. Faculty members participate across a spectrum of research from basic investigative to translational to clinical applied research and are recognized locally, nationally and internationally for their excellence.
BC Cancer, a part of the Provincial Health Services Authority, is committed to reducing the incidence of cancer, reducing mortality from cancer, and improving the quality of life for those living with cancer. It provides a comprehensive cancer control program for the people of British Columbia by working with community partners to deliver a range of oncology services, including prevention, early detection, diagnosis and treatment, research, education, supportive care, rehabilitation and palliative care.
Reporting to the Head of the UBC Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, the successful candidate will be a lung cancer biologist working in the areas of lung cancer initiation/progression, tumor modeling, response to therapy and novel therapeutics. The candidate is expected to build an integrative research group within the Prevention and Research to improve Outcomes in Lung cancer (PRO-Lung) program at BC Cancer, leveraging biological understanding of the lung cancer to translate new strategies for diagnosis and treatment of this disease. The specific objective is to improve outcomes for lung cancer patients through early detection and development of new therapeutic avenues for advanced disease, facilitated by collaborations with established, world-leading programs at the department of Integrative Oncology at BC Cancer and within the Life Sciences community at the University of British Columbia. As a faculty member in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and a Scientist at BC Cancer, the successful applicant will be expected to develop a strong, externally-funded and internationally-competitive research program, collaborate with other faculty members, and actively participate in service to the Research Institute, Department, the University, and the academic/scientific community.
The successful candidate for this position will hold a PhD or MD/PhD degree, or equivalent, with postdoctoral research experience. The successful candidate will have demonstrated research skills and excellence in the areas of cancer biology and therapeutics, with a demonstrated understanding of functional genomics, tumor modeling, and precision medicine. Moreover, an established track record of success in uncovering mechanisms of lung tumorigenesis and response to therapy, with emphasis on developing disease stage-specific model systems as avatars for biological investigation and therapeutic testing, is needed. The successful candidate will have demonstrated evidence of ability in teaching and will be expected to participate in, as well as provide mentorship and training to, the undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate teaching activities of the unit. The incumbent will also show demonstrated ability in scholarly activity and will be expected to provide service to the University and the broader academic and professional community. Additionally, demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the principles of Truth & Reconciliation would be an asset.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
