Assistant Professor, Video Game Design & Implementation

The Department of Computer Science (CPSC) at the University of Calgary seeks outstanding candidates for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level. Applicants must possess a PhD in Computer Science (or equivalent) at the time of appointment. The successful candidate must demonstrate evidence of a track record of publications in high quality journals and conferences. As an alternative to a publication record, outstanding achievements in the computer games industry need to be demonstrated. Successful applicants must also show a strong willingness to contribute to the department’s innovative teaching and research initiatives.

Applicants are sought in the area of Video Game Design & Implementation.

The successful applicant must have demonstrated expertise in computer game design, 3D modeling, digital story telling, computer game environments, and applications of computer games for simulation and training in teaching and learning.

The candidate must show strong interest in multi-disciplinary approaches for creative content creation, construction of collaborative and immersive environments, innovation in game-driven teaching and learning, or augmented intelligence applications for game design, navigation, and engagement.

The applicant should also be able to work in close collaboration with other researchers at the University of Calgary. Interdisciplinarity in an applicant’s research is an asset. There will be opportunities to be engaged and take leadership roles in our Computational Media Design graduate program as well as in Entrepreneurial Thinking and Digital Innovation initiatives at the University of Calgary.

The successful candidate is expected to establish an independent research program aligned with the University of Calgary’s Eyes High vision, and to provide high-quality teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. He/she will actively recruit and supervise graduate students. Peer-reviewed external funding is expected to be obtained and sustained. Industry experience is an asset. Industrial partnerships are strongly encouraged, as we foresee close collaborations with game development companies and animation studios in Alberta, which has a vibrant computer games community.

Recently ranked #1 among young universities in North America, the University of Calgary has significant ongoing research activities in fundamental and applied analytics. Information security, information visualization, visual analytics, human-computer interaction, and engineering of analytics applications are current strengths, leading to close interactions with experts from a wide variety of application domains. Cross-disciplinary teams are tackling big data challenges in energy, health informatics, life sciences, and other areas. Analytics and visualization have been identified as core platform by the University of Calgary, triggering investments in these and related research areas.

The Department of Computer Science is one of Canada’s leaders, with demonstrated excellence in teaching and research.
