Associate Professor/Professor, Strategic Framework Impact Chair in Indigenous Art Practices

The Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Visual Arts and the Department of Art History and Visual Studies at the University of Victoria invites candidates to apply for a President’s Impact Chair in the area of Indigenous Art Practices. UVic Impact Chairs are intended for exceptional researchers acknowledged as leaders in their field, with recognized success in research-inspired teaching and fostering collaborative and interdisciplinary research.
The role of the Chair in convening and facilitating collaborative research and creative activity, dialogue and sharing of knowledge is critically important to the Impact Chair program. The successful candidate will be offered a tenured faculty appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. Rank will be determined in accordance with the Unit Standard and the provisions of the Collective Agreement. The term of the Impact Chair is five years and the holder will receive up to $50,000 annually to support research, partnerships and dynamic learning programs, as applicable. This appointment opportunity is limited to external candidates or to those currently not holding Tenure or Tenure-track positions at the University of Victoria.
The Impact Chair’s research will be centered on exploring new relationships between Truth, Art and Reconciliation. This will manifest itself in many ways but could include: Research creation outputs in the form of art objects, social practice, or other artistic forms; publications and presentations on the interconnections of these research topics; the convening of research groups and communities to explore topics on regional, national, and international levels; or investigating new ways to perform community-based research aligned with the goals of Reconciliation.

We are seeking an exceptional candidate from within the broad field of Indigenous Visual Arts, including creative practices, exhibitions, performances, curatorship, historical research, community-engaged scholarship and practices, and critical writing. The research and creative activity of the Impact Chair, will support and facilitate meaningful change, and play a critical role in indigenizing and decolonizing creative practices, research, and teaching, in ways that will benefit Indigenous peoples and their communities, UVic faculty, students, and staff, and the wider community beyond UVic, locally, nationally, and internationally. The Chair will foster interconnections and improve understanding about how Indigenous Art Practices promote meaningful intellectual exchange, community building, and social responsibility, providing cultural and imaginative resources that seek to bridge the space between institutional and community-based knowledge systems. Reconciliation is a multi-faceted process that requires interdisciplinary study at multiple levels. The Arts have the power to challenge the historical narrative of Canada’s colonial truth, and create meaningful shifts in relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada. The Chair would also take an important leadership role in facilitating this process beginning with our Departments and resonating across the University and beyond. This position is a Joint Appointment between the Departments of Art History & Visual Studies and Visual Arts. The Department of Visual Arts will be the Home Unit. This position will involve teaching of graduate and undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds in both departments.
Qualified candidates will hold a PhD, MFA, or equivalent experience and recognition in the field of cultural production. Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated experience in post-secondary teaching. Candidates must have the ability to teach in the area of Indigenous Arts and in one of the following areas: Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, Photography, Video, Digital and Extended Media, Art Theory, Art History, or Visual Studies. At the Associate level, the candidate will have demonstrated effectiveness in teaching, as defined by the proven commitment to and performance in the intellectual and creative development of students, with a minimum of five years experience at the post-secondary level and have demonstrated administrative experience. At the level of Professor candidates will have 10 or more years of experience teaching at the post-secondary level and an internationally recognized research profile.
The successful candidate will be a practicing professional artist or arts professional whose scholarship, creative production and public circulation demonstrate a recognized significance to a wider context of Indigenous art through broad dissemination and critical reception by peers within Indigenous arts communities, the academic community, and the public at large.
The successful candidate will demonstrate capacity to share in the full range of departmental, faculty and University activities, including general departmental administration, committee work, and related duties, while maintaining an active creative research profile.
