BRIGHT Run Breast Cancer Learning Health System Chair

The BRIGHT Run Breast Cancer Learning Health System Chair was established in 2020. Funding for this endowed position represents both the successful efforts of many breast cancer patients, their families, friends, and health care providers who participate in the annual BRIGHT Run, as well as the commitment of McMaster University to advancing scholarship in data science and learning health systems.

The Department of Oncology is one of several departments within the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University and is geographically located within the Juravinski Cancer Centre at Hamilton Health Sciences (JCC). The Department has over 50 full time faculty representing medical disciplines which include medical oncology, radiation oncology, malignant hematology, as well as faculty with expertise in health services and health policy research, and biostatistics.

The successful applicant will hold a PhD or equivalent training and experience in applied data science that could include natural language processing, machine learning, computational sciences including computational statistics, and is expected to demonstrate productivity and commitment to advancing knowledge in applied data science strategies. The Chair will be a full time appointment within the department of Oncology in the Faculty of Health sciences at McMaster University at the Assistant or Associate professor level with the necessary qualifications to be appointed at these levels. The initial appointment will be a 5 year term which is renewable based on peer review within the Faculty of Health Sciences.

The Chair will be invited to join the Escarpment Cancer Research Institute (ECRI) as a scientist. ECRI has an integrated research agenda which encompasses translational research, clinical trials, quality health care and knowledge translation, all focused on the rapid transfer of research to patient care, system design and health care policy. In addition, the Chair will be encouraged to seek collaboration with colleagues across McMaster working in the area of digital health, data analytics, and machine learning. The Chair will have access to clinical, administrative and research holdings through the Institute for Clinical and Evaluative Sciences (ICES) McMaster research hub. A newly formed Centre for Data Science and Digitial Health (CREATE) at Hamilton Health Sciences will be a key partner.

The Chair will demonstrate a compelling vision for developing health analytics within the Department of Oncology that results in an outstanding program of research and education, with the potential to positively impact cancer patients.
