ACADEMIC VACANCY

CHAIR, DEPARTMENT OF SOCIOLOGY

Applications are invited for the position of Chair of the Department of Sociology (www.sociology.uwo.ca), Faculty of Social Science, at Western University, effective July 1, 2020, or as negotiated. The Chair will be appointed at the Full Professor level with tenure. An appointment as Chair will normally be for a five-year term, renewable. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The ideal candidate will have a PhD in Sociology or a closely related discipline, and provide evidence of research excellence through a record of internationally recognized publications in the discipline’s leading journals, demonstrated ability to obtain external research funding, and strong endorsements from referees. Candidates must have strong quantitative research expertise, preferably in the general area of population dynamics and inequality. The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate skills mentoring students and an outstanding record of teaching in undergraduate and graduate programs. The ideal candidate will also have administrative experience, be a change agent, a decisive leader and excellent communicator.

Western University is a top-ranked research-intensive university. Situated in the Faculty of Social Science, the Department of Sociology offers full programs for undergraduate, MA, and PhD students. The Faculty of Social Science at Western is experiencing a period of significant faculty renewal having made over 40 hires over the last few years, with approximately 10 more hires anticipated. The 2019 QS rankings place Social Science at Western at 84th in the world and 4th in Canada.
