The University of Manitoba invites applications for a Canada Research Chair Tier 2, a tenured or tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, in the area of Analytic Techniques in Population Data Science and Data Curation.
The Government of Canada has established the CRC program to enable Canadian universities to foster world class research excellence. The proposed CRC aligns with the University's strategic research plan that identifies Integrative Research in Health and Well-being as a targeted area.
The Chair will be situated within the Manitoba Centre for Health Policy (MCHP) in the Department of Community Health Sciences (CHS), Max Rady College of Medicine, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences. The MCHP is an internationally recognized centre of excellence that carries out population-based research on health services, population and public health, and the social determinants of health. The MCHP houses the Manitoba Population Research Data Repository (Repository) that includes a globally unique combination of individually-linkable de-identified data from health, education, social services, justice and many other sectors. This critical infrastructure provides a rare opportunity to better describe and understand how clinical, policy and social factors contribute to population health and social well-being. The MCHP’s exceptional research portfolio provides a superb platform of data resources for the Chair to rapidly develop a world-class research program, collaborating with existing faculty members and other partners. The Chair will be expected to develop and lead an interdisciplinary and collaborative program of research focused on best practices in analytic techniques in population data science and data curation. The Chair will build knowledge around the use of machine learning and neural networks to support optimal use of MCHP’S rich linked data holdings, by streamlining data analysis processes and discovery.
The successful candidate will enhance training capacity at MCHP in Population Data Science and analysis of complex data, and provide leadership in this field based on the unique and growing collection of data resources available. The Chair will accelerate the advancement of research capacity at MCHP in Population Data Science though collaboration with other faculty members in the areas of medicine, public health, statistics, computer science and knowledge translation.
The Chair will have teaching responsibilities at the graduate level, and will be expected to supervise Master’s and PhD students and post-doctoral fellows.
The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. or equivalent in a relevant discipline. Necessary qualifications for the position include evidence of high research quality and productivity appropriate to career stage, as demonstrated by a track record of strong research activity, research funding and academic output, and a record of mentorship of undergraduate, graduate and/or postdoctoral level trainees. Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
A successful candidate is expected to be selected no later than July 2019, after which a Tier 2 CRC nomination application will be prepared, and expected to be submitted in October 2019. Chairs are awarded by the Tri-agency Institutional Programs Secretariat after a rigorous evaluation, and award decisions are expected in the Spring of 2020. The appointment will be conditional on a successful Canada Research Chair nomination, and is expected to begin on July 1, 2020.
Applicants must be exceptional emerging scholars with less than 10 years of experience as an active researcher since obtaining their terminal degree at the time of nomination. Tier 2 Chairs are valued at $100,000 per year for 5 years with an option to renew once. Applicants who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree, and where career breaks exist, such as maternity, parental or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc., will have their eligibility for a Tier 2 Chair assessed through the program's Tier 2 justification process. New CRC awardees are also eligible for infrastructure support from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) to help acquire state-of-the-art equipment essential to their work, including high-performance computing and access to Compute Canada resources to support the computational power needed to perform leading-edge research, and to store and analyze data.
