Dean, Faculty of Education and Social Work

Thompson Rivers University

For 50 years, Thompson Rivers University (TRU) has taken pride in providing an excellent education to students with a variety of backgrounds and perspectives who are at various stages of their learning journey. TRU is a comprehensive, learner-centred, environmentally responsible institution that serves its regional, national, and international learners and their communities through high quality and flexible education, training, research and scholarship. From traditional academics to trades, from certificates to graduate degrees, TRU offers students a choice from over 140 on-campus programs and 60 Open Learning programs. More than 30,400 students study on campuses in Kamloops, Williams Lake and regional centres throughout the Interior, or through Open Learning in distance or online courses and programs. Research, creation and innovation thrive in TRU’s open, flexible learning environment.

The Faculty of Education and Social Work (EDSW) is a community of diverse faculty, staff and students committed to a shared mission of ‘realizing potential’. Its focus is on truly unexpected levels of student success and meaningful research that is a form of service to others. With approximately 110 faculty members and over 7,900 enrolments in 17 programs across two schools and two departments, EDSW offers a unique range of programs from Adult Special Education (ASE) and academic access to professional programs and graduate studies. EDSW’s goals are clear. Be inspired. Be inspiring.

As EDSW’s chief academic and administrative officer, the Dean is responsible to the Provost and Vice-President Academic and Research for providing strong leadership and vision in the articulation and implementation of EDSW’s evolving strategic plan for professional and career development, education, research and outreach in alignment with TRU’s mission, vision and strategic priorities. As an accomplished teacher, researcher and/or practitioner, the Dean will possess an authentic, open, transparent and collegial style of leadership with the ability to collaborate with colleagues to plan EDSW’s future.

The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, be able to demonstrate knowledge of trends and current issues in education and social work across diverse settings (urban, rural and remote) and have a record of advocacy, service, innovation, scholarly engagement and service to the profession. They will have an outstanding academic record, a strong and deep appreciation for research, teaching and service and demonstrated experience as an inspirational leader and mentor. An earned doctorate is required, and a strong understanding of the intellectual and operational diversity across the spectrum of disciplines within EDSW is essential.

Thompson Rivers University is strongly committed to fostering diversity within our community. We welcome those who would contribute to the further diversification of our staff, our faculty and its scholarship including, but not limited to, women, visible minorities, Indigenous people, persons with disabilities and persons of any sexual orientation or gender identity. Please note that all qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, applications from Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
