The Faculty of Kinesiology at the University of Calgary has a long and impressive history. Starting as the Department of Physical Education, and gaining Faculty status in 1975, the Faculty is now the number 1 ranked sport science school in North America and 11th out of 429 universities globally (Shanghai Ranking). The Faculty’s mission is to provide excellence in research, education and community programs related to human movement, sport, health, and wellness. This mission is in alignment with UCalgary Research Priorities: Child Health, One Health, Brain and Mental Health, Engineering Solutions for Health, Inflammation, Infection and Chronic Diseases, and Human Dynamics in a Changing World.
The Faculty of Kinesiology offers a world-class environment for research and learning. As a direct result of the 1988 Calgary Olympics, it has also built superb training facilities for coaches and athletes at the varsity, community and Olympic levels. Kinesiology students receive high-quality and relevant, experiential learning opportunities that inform their future careers and contribute to research and scholarship in the Faculty and University. The Faculty is also the home to the successful Dinos varsity teams, Olympic Oval, Active Living, Outdoor Centre, and Sport Medicine Centre. The Faculty improves the health and mobility of our society through its renowned research, which includes the following research themes: Movement Science and Musculoskeletal Health; Injury Prevention; Sport Medicine and Rehabilitation; Exercise Physiology and Nutrition in Health and Sport; and Psychosocial Aspects of Health and Sport.
The Faculty of Kinesiology is home to 1,200 undergraduate and 136 graduate students, 35 academic staff (Continuing, Contingent Term or Limited Term), three Tier 1 Canada Research Chairs, and one Tier 2 Canada Research Chair. The Faculty offers two undergraduate degree programs: a Bachelor of Kinesiology and a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology, an innovative course-based Master of Kinesiology, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy in addition to numerous combined programs with other Faculties at the University of Calgary.
The University of Calgary now invites applications for the appointment of a Dean, Faculty of Kinesiology. Reporting to the Provost and Vice-President (Academic), the Dean will be an experienced and strategic leader, a strong communicator and advocate, and an accomplished researcher and academic. The Dean is responsible for fostering a Faculty culture that stresses inclusion, transparency and vision. The Dean leads the Faculty in securing support for research, scholarship, infrastructure and outreach. The Dean plays a key role in fostering a faculty-wide culture that supports and strengthens the theory and practice of interdisciplinarity, excellence in research, teaching with innovative curricula, and fostering a reciprocally supportive relationship with community. The Dean will establish and foster international partnerships and lead in developing, implementing and evaluating research and educational ventures. The Dean also ensures that the Faculty is effectively represented regarding University planning and management processes.
The role of the Dean is to lead and manage key aspects of the faculty activities related to research though delegated authority from the Vice-President (Research). The Dean represents the faculty in a wide variety of matters relating to the research mission and programs of the faculty, working closely with the Associate Deans and other research administrators, and with individual faculty members to enhance the capacity and quality of research in the Faculty. In addition to the research component, the Dean also leads the business units and facilities of the Olympic Oval, Active Living, Dinos Athletics, and the Sports Medicine Clinic. The Dean is the key interlock between the Faculty of Kinesiology and over 20 sports that use the Faculty facilities for training and competition.
The ideal candidate will be a distinguished scholar who has maintained an active program of scholarly enquiry while holding a senior-level administrative position within an academic environment. They must have strong organization, administration, financial, and budgeting skills to go along with superior leadership, and people management skills. As a clear communicator with the capacity to influence and inspire, the Dean will articulate and implement the vision, priorities, and strategic plan for the Faculty. The Dean must demonstrate commitment to research, scholarship, and community service while contributing to a culture where excellence and innovation in research and teaching are valued and rewarded. A track record in external funding successes and the ability to build and foster strong relationships with the local, national and international communities, government, and alumni are essential.
The successful candidate will hold a PhD or equivalent and have qualifications commensurate with an appointment with tenure at the rank of professor. The successful candidate should also have knowledge of High-Performance Sports, USports, and Community sport and recreation landscapes. Further, the candidate should have experience of sport and recreation facility operations and athletic fields, and the ability to think strategically and long-term about how the faculty can best operate its facilities. The successful candidate will provide leadership in creating space for people who hold diverse perspectives, such as knowing, understanding and engaging with members of equity deserving groups, including but not limited to, Indigenous peoples, racialized people, members of the LGBTQ2S+ communities, and groups who may express non-dominant ideas, practices, and expectations. With an authentic and demonstrated commitment to, and understanding of equity, diversity, and inclusion practices and Indigenous engagement, this leader will drive change and inspire faculty, students, staff, and community partners. In addition to creating a culture of inclusion, the successful candidate needs to be capable at building a culture of trust and autonomy, empowering direct reports to be successful with adequate levels of oversight, support, and coaching.
The appointment as Dean, Faculty of Kinesiology is for a five-year period with the possibility of renewal. The successful candidate will be offered an academic position “With Tenure” at the rank of Professor.
