Dean of Architecture and Planning

Located in the vibrant, coastal city of Halifax, Nova Scotia, on the traditional, unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq, Dalhousie University is Atlantic Canada’s leading research university. As one of Dalhousie’s 13 Faculties, the Faculty of Architecture and Planning’s mission is to advance scholarly and creative achievement in professions for designing and planning the built and natural environment. The Faculty’s two Schools offer accredited programs in planning and architecture as well as graduate research degrees in specialized areas. As work placements are an integral part to the curricula, the Faculty’s co-op programs are one of the most established in the country. Its faculty members are nationally and internationally recognized for their collaborative research in the broad areas of: design innovation; designing for a changing world; and mobilizing knowledge to build stronger communities. The Faculty of Architecture and Planning is co-located with the Faculty of Engineering in the heart of downtown Halifax on Dalhousie’s Sexton campus, which has been recently transformed into a leading, state-of-the-art hub for collaborative learning, design and innovation.

Dalhousie University is seeking a new Dean of Architecture and Planning to provide visionary and strategic leadership to support the Faculty’s continued growth and expansion. Reporting to the Provost and Vice-President Academic, the Dean will work with faculty, staff, students and the broader community to create and implement a new strategic plan which supports and promotes teaching and research excellence. As a Faculty highly integrated with both professions and the community, the Dean must maintain strong and productive relationships with all partners, including accreditation bodies, professional associations, industry, all levels of government, and other universities and colleges. The Dean plays a crucial role in maintaining the standards, integrity, effectiveness and efficiency of the academic enterprise and aligning the financial operations of the Faculty with its academic mission. The Dean will also foster a collegial and respectful environment which supports faculty, staff and student development, with attention to issues of equity, diversity and inclusion.

As the ideal candidate, you are a highly collaborative, trusted and inspirational leader who will ensure that an ecosystem exists for both Schools inside the Faculty to thrive. You will promote interdisciplinarity inside the Faculty, across the campuses and with the broader community. Your belief in the societal importance of the work produced by the Faculty and its graduates motivates you to embrace research and innovation, and to support academic excellence. Your experience leading a diverse team and your financial acumen will assist you in managing the operations of the Faculty in the academic environment. You hold an advanced degree in a relevant field and an understanding and appreciation of both professions and of relevant accreditation bodies. Your experience supporting and promoting the values of equity, diversity and inclusion will be reflected in your management ethos. You are comfortable with revenue generation activities, from fundraising to government and industry partnerships.
