DEPARTMENT CHAIR – DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE
Applications are invited for the position of Chair, Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Science. Applications from external and internal candidates, who must hold at least the rank of Associate Professor with tenure or its international equivalent, will be considered. A record of high quality undergraduate and graduate teaching, supervision, and research in Computer Science is required, as well as some administrative and research leadership experience. Applicants must have a PhD degree in Computer Science or related discipline, and a strong record of research productivity in the form of publications in relevant peer-reviewed journals or conference proceedings, awards, invited talks and other scholarly achievements. The successful candidate will have a clear vision for the direction of the Department, demonstrated leadership ability and integrity, excellent communication skills, and a willingness to be a strong advocate for the Department. The successful candidate will be forward thinking and able to recognize, take, and create; research, education, and interdisciplinary opportunities. They must have the ability to establish and maintain strong relationships both within Science and across the Western community, as well as in the Canadian Computer Science academic and industrial communities.
The Chair will consult with the Dean on Departmental budgetary requirements and administer the Departmental budget. The Chair will also be expected to develop and facilitate the implementation of a Departmental academic, research and administrative plan that will aim to position the Department within the top tier of Canadian Computer Science departments. Furthermore, the Chair will be a part of the Faculty of Science leadership team and as such, will help develop a new academic plan for the Faculty of Science. These plans must be consistent with one another, as well as with the strategic plans of the University. The Chair will develop and implement a strategy for mentoring, developing, and supporting Departmental faculty and staff across career stages, with a strong commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
The Department of Computer Science is a research-intensive Department in Western’s Faculty of Science, with undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs. Established research areas within the Department include algorithms, artificial intelligence & machine learning, bioinformatics, computational neuroscience, distributed systems & networks, software engineering and theoretical computer science. The Department has strong ties to industry and strongly encourages and supports participation in interdisciplinary research. The Department jointly offers an undergraduate data science program and a professional Master’s program in data analytics with the Department of Statistical and Actuarial Sciences and has established a collaborative Master’s program in Artificial Intelligence. Research is supported by high performance computing facilities of the Shared Hierarchical Academic Research Computing Network (SHARCNET) and the Southern Ontario Smart Computing Innovation Platform (SOSCIP).
Western Science has recently made significant investments in large-scale data analytics and management. Western Computer Science has recently hired a Western Research Chair in Cyber-Physical Systems and a Western Research Chair in Computational Neuroscience as well as regular faculty positions in machine learning. The Department is currently recruiting for a position in databases. The Department of Computer Science and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering are looking to build upon their current strengths to become a centre of excellence in the internet of things (IoT), networking and digital services. There are many opportunities to participate in collaborations with researchers in different application domains including advanced manufacturing, autonomous systems, and cyber-physical systems.

While the faculty appointment is tenured, the term of the chair position will normally be for five years. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The appointment is anticipated to commence on July 1, 2020.
