Faculty, School of Humanitarian Studies

Royal Roads University

Royal Roads University (RRU) is seeking applications for a full-time Faculty member for the MA in Disaster and Emergency Management (MADEM) program within the School of Humanitarian Studies, Faculty of Social and Applied Sciences.

As the successful applicant, you will be a scholar-practitioner whose academic and professional expertise is in the field of disaster and emergency management.

The Master of Arts in Disaster and Emergency Response program is a two-year graduate inter-disciplinary program. There are two intakes per year, with one blended offering that includes two on-campus residencies and the other a fully online offering.

As a Faculty member at RRU, your workload will include teaching, research, and service. You will have a teaching philosophy that is aligned with the values and practices of our university (see Learning, Teaching and Research Model). You will have experience with a range of different academic administration functions and a demonstrated track record of successful collaboration with internal and external partners in the development and delivery of academic programs. Your service responsibilities will likely include administration of the MA Disaster and Emergency Management program with teaching opportunities available in both blended and online programs.

In addition to a collegial learning community, RRU offers a comprehensive compensation package to core faculty, with a salary based on rank, qualifications and experience.

The program takes a holistic approach to understanding how the intersection of social, political, economic, and environmental systems contribute to hazards and disasters in society. The program is grounded in over 50 years of social science research that examines the diverse and emergent risks emergency management faces today; how those hazard risks are created in society; as well as how those risks can be reduced and managed. The program covers all aspects of emergency management practice, including prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery. Students develop the knowledge and skills to help develop resilient households, organizations, and communities. Three alternatives for program completion are offered: a course-based track, and internship-based track, and a thesis track.

Typical MADEM students are working professionals in the disaster and emergency management or related fields or have an undergraduate degree in disaster and emergency management or a related field of study. The diversity of student backgrounds and richness of their life experiences contributes to the learning environment.
