Instructor and Teaching Chair in Indigenous Perspectives in Engineering Education

The Centre for Environmental Engineering Research and Education (CEERE) in the Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary invites applications for a Teaching Chair in Indigenous Education and Engineering with the preferred start date of January 1, 2021. CEERE is focused on the development and growth of multidisciplinary education programs in Environmental Engineering and Energy and Environment with a mandate to bring together learners, educators, researchers and industry participants to benefit from a team-based approach for tackling current and future environmental challenges in Alberta, Canada and worldwide.

The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of Instructor (tenure-track) jointly in CEERE and one of our five engineering departments (Civil; Geomatics; Chemical and Petroleum; Electrical and Computer; and Mechanical and Manufacturing). Applicants at the instructor level should present potential for successful teaching and interest in developing scholarship of teaching and learning.

Applicants will have earned an undergraduate degree in engineering and have completed a graduate degree in engineering. A suitable combination of experience and education may be considered. The successful candidate will have a strong interest in undergraduate education, teaching and learning pedagogy, and increasing access to engineering education.

Applicants should have a demonstrated record of scholarly and/or professional achievement, relative to their stage of career, in Indigenous education, and/or community-engaged scholarship and teaching. A commitment to collegiality and collaborative Indigenous-centered curriculum development and teaching and applied knowledge of Indigenous methodologies and pedagogies are considered assets. Applicants should have an understanding of, and commitment to Indigenous communities, cultures, protocols and traditions. The ideal candidate will be committed to building and fostering relationships within Indigenous communities in Alberta and beyond.

It is expected that the successful candidate will provide course instruction and also establish course and learning activities in the area of sustainability engineering and integrating Indigenous perspectives within the engineering curriculum. Offering learning opportunities that integrate Indigenous knowledge into engineering aligns with the goals of the Schulich School of Engineering. The successful candidate will also contribute to the development of academic programming to increase the access of Indigenous communities to engineering degree programs.

In addition to a tenure track academic staff position, the Teaching Chair will be appointed for a five-year term with possibility for renewal for an additional five years contingent upon favorable performance.

The appointees should be registered (or be eligible for registration) as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).

This ongoing process has resulted in the development of an Indigenous Strategy, ii’ taa’poh’to’p – Together in a Good Way – intended to guide the University’s relationship with the Indigenous peoples in whose territory the university resides, bringing Indigenous perspectives into all aspects of teaching, learning, and research.

The Schulich School of Engineering vision identifies three priority areas: enhancing global research impact, expanding access to engineering and enriching student experience.
