Instructor (Limited Term), Biological Sciences

The Department of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Science, at the University of Calgary invites applications for a full-time limited-term appointment as an Instructor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Calgary. This limited-term appointment will be for a one year period, commencing in August 2020.

We seek a highly collaborative individual to teach in Principles of Genetics (BIOL 311) and Introduction to Cellular and Molecular Biology (BIOL 331).

BIOL 311 provides an introduction to Mendelian inheritance, allelic relationships, genetic and sex linkage, sex determination, chromosome structure, segregation and recombination, structure and function of genetic material, molecular genetics, genetics of bacteria and viruses, gene function, complementation, and regulation of gene expression. The successful candidate would also coordinate the course, half of which is taught by another instructor, as well as the laboratory component of the course. For Fall 2020, all components of the course will be offered via online delivery modes

In BIOL 331, the successful candidate would teach the first part of the course that deals with cellular structure and function; molecular organization of membranes, organelles, nucleus and cytoplasmic structures. As well, the candidate would develop and supervise the tutorials for this part of the course; tutorials are taught by graduate teaching assistants.

The successful candidate would also contribute to teaching in and/or coordination of other biology courses as required. In all courses, duties may include the design and development of lecture material, laboratories, assessments and other learning resources.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in genetics or cellular/molecular biology. At least one-year post-doctoral experience and/or one year of teaching experience in a post-secondary setting is required. Candidates must demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching and learning as evidenced by established successes and use of contemporary approaches to teaching (e.g. active learning) and possess a broad knowledge of and interest in biological education pedagogy.

The successful candidate, in addition to teaching, will also be expected to engage in scholarship and service as appropriate.
