The Department of English offers courses in all genres – drama, fiction, poetry, and prose – and in Academic Writing, Creative Writing, and Creative Nonfiction. Our faculty have expertise across a range of Canadian, British, American, and postcolonial literatures, and a long-standing commitment to the study of writers and thinkers from around the world who reflect and shape the cultural histories of the people of the English-speaking world. Our program is highly personalized, and we invite and expect students to ask questions and share ideas during seminar discussions and lectures. Students discover modes of thought and methods of investigation that not only enrich the reading and understanding of language and literature, but are applicable to various disciplines.
Algoma University invites applications for a 3-year contractually-limited term appointment in Writing at the rank of Assistant Professor in the Department of English, at its Sault Ste. Marie campus, commencing January 1, 2022, or as negotiated. The successful candidate will be expected to teach Academic Writing: Fundamentals, as well as other writing courses, and to work with other members of the department to further develop our writing program.
Candidates should have a Ph.D. in English, Writing Studies, Rhetoric and Composition, or a closely related field; expertise in writing pedagogy; experience teaching first-year academic writing at the post-secondary level; a record of teaching excellence; and a demonstrated commitment to undergraduate teaching and research. Expertise and experience in any of the following areas is a plus: editing, writing for the web and social media, digital storytelling, creative writing, writing about science. We are seeking a candidate with expertise and experience in teaching the fundamentals of academic writing to both first-language and second-language speakers of English. The ability to teach also in a pre-1800 field of literature would be an asset.

a statement of teaching philosophy and evidence of teaching effectiveness (e.g., examples of peer and/or student evaluations)
the names, contact information and relationship of five referees (one of whom should be the most recent immediate supervisor)
Short-listed candidates will be asked to provide a relevant 15-25 page writing sample.
