The Royal Military College of Canada is situated on the traditional lands of the Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabeg Peoples. Established in 1876, the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC) is a bilingual military-civilian university with a proud heritage of producing leaders for the Canadian Armed Forces and Canada. Its mission is to produce officers with the mental, physical and linguistic capabilities and the ethical foundation required to lead with distinction in the Canadian Armed Forces. Its role is multifaceted and unique, and it is dedicated to the education and development of leaders through a programme that consists of four components: Academics, Military Leadership, Physical Fitness, and Bilingualism. Located in the historic City of Kingston, against the beautiful backdrop of Lake Ontario, RMC has approximately 200 faculty, 400 staff and 3,600 part-time and full-time graduate and undergraduate students (on-campus and distance learning) in the Faculties of Social Sciences and Humanities, Science, and Engineering.
Following the release of the report by the former Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada, Madame Louise Arbour, in May 2022, RMC is poised for change and growth as it looks to adapt to the changing world we live in. It therefore offers an exciting opportunity for innovation and culture change. Against this backdrop, RMC is seeking its next Principal to provide academic leadership that fosters a progressive vision of inclusivity and diversity.
The Principal is the academic leader of the College and most senior academic advisor of the Canadian Armed Forces. Accountable for defining the College’s academic policies and frameworks and for the operation of all its academic and second language activities, the Principal represents RMC both nationally and internationally, working to maintain and further promote the College as an accredited university of academic excellence. The Principal will foster a culture of collegiality, collaboration and inclusivity, working with faculty and the Commandant to ensure a shared vision for the College.
The ideal candidate will possess a demonstrated track record of academic, executive leadership or organizational management in an established university, including experience in university governance and the management of human and financial resources. With a PhD and a distinguished record of research and teaching in a discipline appropriate to RMC, they will have demonstrated experience creating and maintaining an academic environment that fosters teaching and research excellence, innovation, equity, diversity, inclusivity, accessibility, and student success. They will bring an understanding of the educational and professional development needs of students, faculty, and staff, alongside an awareness of the military education system and leadership. The Principal must have unwavering integrity; excellent interpersonal and communication skills; a transparent and collaborative leadership style; and an abiding respect for the principles of collegial governance.
Most importantly, the successful candidate will understand current issues and challenges facing individuals from equity-seeking communities and possess the skills to engage and work in solidarity with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds. Fluency in both English and French is preferred.
