Research Associate, Cell Biology and Anatomy, Cumming School of Medicine

The Department of Cell Biology & Anatomy in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Associate. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Principal Investigator and will be working on a CIHR-related project based on the discovery of brief seizures result in a severe (pO2 < 10mmHg) hypoxic event that can last about an hour in the hippocampus.

The Research Associate will lead projects to determine the contribution of the post-seizure ischemic/hypoxic period on brain anatomy and function.

They will perform quality control testing techniques when cleaning and maintain instruments, all equipment and supplies. There is a responsibility to ensure that the daily operations of the laboratory are completed in an efficient and effective manner. This position will work both independently and in a team environment.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

• Under general supervision & direction of the PI, develop and implement original experiments within the guidelines of the research
• Perform detailed design, documentation, and implementation of moderately complex technological systems
• Perform patch-clamp experiments on neurons in the amygdala in relation to seizures, behavioural measures and endocannabinoid manipulations
• Examine the plasticity of the CA1 hippocampal region during the postictal hypoxic period
• Recommend change to processes or procedures and interact with other members of the team and undertake literature reviews
• Provide technical support for other team members through advice on technical lab issues
• Will work with various biological samples (eg. blood, tissues, brain, etc)
• Responsible for presentations in producing figures for publication
• Produce initial drafts of manuscripts for publication and appropriate scientific journals
• Conduct literature review, surveys, laboratory experiments and other research in scholarly publications when required to
• Train other staff and students in the operation of equipment and laboratory protocols as required
• Maintaining the safe operation of equipment
• Manage their own time effectively and ensures immediate reports to manager is kept informed of activities, and progress of work

Qualifications / Requirements:
• PhD degree is required as well as specialized knowledge in rodent surgery, electrode implantation, animal models of seizures, patch-clamp electrophysiology, field potentials, endocannabinoid pharmacology, hippocampal circuitry and plasticity
• Minimum 3 years of post-doctoral experience in a relevant research area
• Must have a track record of success with at least 2-3 peer-reviewed publications in international and reputable journals
• Direct and demonstrable research experience in the subject matter of the research project is essential
• A positive attitude and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are critical to success
• WHMIS
• Strong communication skills, written and oral
• Effective time management skills
