The Human Early Learning Partnership (HELP) at the School of Population and Public Health, University of British Columbia, seeks a full-time Research Associate for a one-year term, with the possibility for extension to two years. The Human Early Learning Partnership ( is a prominent interdisciplinary research centre with a focus on child development, situated within the School of Population and Public Health, in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia, one of Canada's premier public research universities (

Under the supervision of Dr. Anne Gadermann and with the support and mentorship provided by HELP faculty members as well as by research collaborators across UBC – the incumbent will conduct quantitative research on early and middle child development, drawing from theory and research on child mental health, social and emotional learning, resiliency, social determinants of health, and ecological perspectives on child and youth development. The Research Associate will have access to unique population-based longitudinal data and linkages, as well as intervention research, and work within an interdisciplinary research environment. The position primarily focuses on research and manuscript writing as well as grant writing and providing support (e.g., data access requests, ethics renewals) for maintaining and expanding our longitudinal, linked databases; opportunities for contributing to teaching, knowledge translation, and community presentations also exist.

HELP encourages applications from individuals who seek to develop an independent research career, and contribute to a research environment that seeks to produce and disseminate research evidence about actionable context factors related to child and youth health, social and emotional learning, and well-being, particularly during early and middle childhood.

• PhD in child development, human development, (developmental) psychology, or a related field, with a particular focus on the early and middle childhood years
• Expertise and experience in complex quantitative analyses (including analyses of developmental trajectories, analyses of socioeconomic data in relation to developmental trajectories, subgroup analyses that employ statistical methods such as multi-group CFA/SEM, latent class analysis, and multilevel mixture modelling)
• Knowledge and some experience in using qualitative methodologies and analytic strategies
• Strong foundation in research design and measurement (e.g., validity, reliability) in relation to developmental theory/social and emotional learning/risk and resiliency
• Demonstrated interest and commitment to work in areas of early and middle childhood development, mental health and well-being
• Enthusiasm for intellectual rigor and engagement
• Excellent writing ability and publication record
• Ability and willingness to work productively in a fast-paced and often demanding environment, with deadlines
• Experience working in a team environment
• Excellent interpersonal skills
• Experience with project management is a plus
