Position Overview

The Department of Chemical & Petroleum Engineering in the Schulich School of Engineering invites applications for a Research Associate. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 6 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Research Associate reports directly to the PI/Director of EERG at the University of Calgary, and is involved in a wide range of work that is centered on research projects in carbon capture and utilization technologies.

The successful candidate will have skills and talents including, but not limited to:

- Possess in-depth knowledge and skills. Developed analytical abilities to solve major complex problems.

- Perform advanced research in scientific fields to expand and develop technology. May be a skilled writer and presenter contributing to technical publications.
- Operate with minimal supervision. Undertake full responsibility for quality control.
- May work with teams particularly in collaborative activity with Industrial institutional and academic partners

Position Description
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Client Relations:
- Provide assistance to principal investigator and industrial partners
- Provide information to research participants in a timely manner

Analysis & Reporting:
- Work to maximize the value, timeliness and effectiveness of process simulation outcomes, analysis and dissemination, both within the University of Calgary and elsewhere
- Work with the Principal Investigator to ensure the research is conducted effectively
- Participate in the preparation of materials for research project proposals
- Prepare reports of activities, in order to ensure that appropriate timelines are met

- Work within the team to ensure that appropriate timelines are met and organization is maintained
- Request, organize and submit documents necessary for grant applications
- Perform Process Simulations and Analysis on the merging processes in CO2 Capture and Conversion, assist graduate students in preparing deliverables (presentations and reports for internal group meetings, as well as reporting outcomes to Industrial partners and sponsors)
- Carry out literature searches, data gathering as well as to examine the collected data
- Be a liaison between investigators in research studies and effectively obtain necessary documents for granting agencies in a timely manner
- Responsible for time management of projects and a variety of administrative duties that include but are not limited to, answering emails, helping graduate students in their research works, writing and editing proposals and journal papers, conducting computer simulations, preparing technical reports and presentations for the financial sponsors; Devon Energy, Canadian Natural Resources Limited (CNRL), and NSERC

Qualifications / Requirements:
- Post-secondary education: MSc or PhD degree from an accredited university required
- Possess 3 - 5 years of experience in oil and gas industries required
- Competency in data management and analysis, or the creation of conference materials required
- Must possess advanced technical skills and ability
- Ability to perform moderate physical/manual activities
- High degree of judgement, creativity, analytical, and problem solving skills
- Demonstrated organization, innovation, and interpersonal skills
- Superlative knowledge of theory and practical application of technical procedures and techniques required
- WHMIS certificate for conducting experiments safely during lab work required
- Skilled in operating and maintaining characterization equipment in wet labs; Such as BET devices for surface area measurements, Gas analyzer and Gas Chromatography Machines for gas composition measurements, CHNS/O elemental analyzers for characterization of solid carbonaceous fuels required
- High level of hands-on skills with fixed-bed, fluidized bed reactors, and high pressure cells
- Proven hands-on experience with Process Simulation Software Aspen Plus and Aspen HYSYS is required
- Experienced in Process Design, Optimization, and Heat Integration
- Possess a high level of problem-solving and analytical skills
- Knowledgeable in Economic Assessment of Chemical Processes
- Familiar with Energy & Environment specifically CO2 Capture and Conversion Technologies
- Proven track record of using Aspen Energy Analyzer, Aspen Process Economic Analyzer and Cost Estimation modules for economic evaluation of Carbon Conversion technologies via Gasification, Steam Reforming and Dry Reforming Processes
- Proficient in Microsoft Software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and advanced computer skills
- The ability to work in a team environment is important, as well as the ability to interact and collaborate with others in a courteous, patient and helpful manner.
