Team-Based Practice Educator in Clinical Exercise Physiology

University of British Columbia

Situated on the unceded, ancestral, and traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) people in Vancouver, Canada, the School of Kinesiology in the Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia (UBC) invites applications for a Team-Based Practice Educator in Clinical Exercise Physiology. This is a full-time position consisting of a 50% Lecturer appointment and a 50% Clinical Instructor appointment. The 50% Lecturer appointment is governed by the Collective Agreement between UBC and the Faculty Association of UBC. The term for the appointment is one year, with the possibility of renewal. The position is expected to begin on March 16, 2026, or as mutually agreed upon by the University and the successful candidate.

UBC Health is in the process of establishing a Centre for Innovation in Collaborative Health Education and Team-Based Care. The goal is to create a first-of-its-kind provincial centre, providing an opportunity for students, educators, healthcare professionals, researchers, and patients to work together to improve the quality of healthcare delivery through innovations in interprofessional learning, team-based care, and research. A core component of the Centre will be a new, purpose-built interprofessional teaching clinic in the Gateway South building (“Gateway Clinic”) on the UBC Vancouver Point Grey campus. By convening and facilitating partnerships with learners, patients, and UBC health professions programs, the Gateway Clinic will lead ongoing innovation and scholarship in collaborative health education and team-based primary care in British Columbia (BC), building learner competencies and placement capacity for collaborative practice in primary care across the province. The Gateway Clinic will aim to support approximately 4,500 patients through longitudinal team-based primary care via the BC Patient Attachment System. UBC’s School of Nursing is the administrative operator of the Gateway to Team-Based Care. As one of the participating health professions programs of the Gateway Clinic, the School of Kinesiology will be the home academic unit for this position.

The successful candidate is required to hold:
• A Master’s degree in the field of kinesiology or exercise science with a Clinical Exercise Physiology specialization;
• Certification as a Clinical Exercise Physiologist (Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology/American College of Sports Medicine) or equivalent;
• Certification at or above the level of Standard First Aid and CPR-C, including AED, and clearance of criminal record check for working with vulnerable persons;
• Professional liability insurance;
• Minimum of 3-5 years of clinical practice experience in a relevant practice area; and
• Specific expertise in primary care or experience working in team-based care contexts.

In addition, the successful candidate will have evidence of:
· Ability to design and deliver safe, evidence-based exercise programs, health education, and physical activity behaviour support for diverse populations across the lifespan, including those with chronic conditions and multi-morbidity;
· Exemplifying the values and practice of equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization in clinical, teaching, and scholarly work;
· Experience in learner-centred teaching and mentorship that fosters competency development, critical reflection, and professional growth in diverse student and trainee populations;
· Ability to work collaboratively and effectively within interprofessional, team-based care settings in both academic and clinical environments;
· Engagement in program evaluation, scholarship of teaching and learning, or applied research, with outputs such as presentations, publications, or projects that advance collaborative health education and practice improvement; and
· Ability to articulate and advocate for the role of Clinical Exercise Physiologists in healthcare systems, contributing to the development of primary care models and allied health integration.

Preference will be given to candidates who have a strong record of teaching and mentorship experience in the clinical setting, and familiarity with the UBC School of Kinesiology curriculum.

Reporting to the Director of the School of Kinesiology, with functional reporting to the Director of Care and the Program Director of the Gateway Clinic, the successful candidate will play a crucial role in providing instruction, mentorship, evaluation, and oversight of student trainees from across the health professions. They will be expected to (i) teach as a practice educator; (ii) contribute to the assessment and evaluation of learners in the clinical setting; and (iii) support student learning and innovation in person-centred, team-based care. They will be responsible for continuity of care using evidence-informed practice to collaborate with other health professionals and support learners’ practice education. The successful candidate will also be expected to lead and/or participate in quality improvement initiatives, practice-relevant committees (e.g., School of Kinesiology Clinical Exercise Physiology and Professional Kinesiology Advisory Group which oversees the professional curriculum), scholarly activities, and evaluation of collaborative health education programs and team-based practices. As the Gateway Clinic is a newly developing initiative, the successful candidate will help to develop and implement the practices employed at the clinic and will evaluate and iterate upon best practices in team-based education and care. The annual workload is assigned by the Director of the School of Kinesiology, in consultation with the Director of Care and the Program Director of the Gateway Clinic, which includes teaching and teaching-related academic duties (service and scholarly activity).

Reappointment of this position requires demonstration of excellence in teaching and is dependent on funding availability. The position is also expected to engage in supervision of learners in the practice education setting, service contributions, and scholarly activities to advance collaborative health education, practice or quality improvement.

This position is subject to budgetary approval. The expected starting salary for this position is between $90,000 – $94,000 per annum. Starting salary is determined by the candidate's qualifications and experience.
