Tenure Track Position in Sociology (Indigenous Studies)

The Opportunity

The Department of Sociology invites applications for a tenure-stream appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor. The position will commence July 1, 2019 and is subject to final budgetary approval. The area of specialization is Indigenous studies, with a focus on Turtle Island/North America reflected in a program of research that demonstrates a strong commitment to Indigenous knowledges and methodologies, a record of collaboration with Indigenous Nations, communities and organizations, and active engagement with anti-colonial struggles in North America.

The successful candidate will be able to apply Indigenous perspectives and/or Indigenist approaches to teaching Indigenous-focused courses and Sociology courses in at least one of the following areas: research methods, social theory, introduction to sociology or popular culture.

The Sociology Department in the Faculty of Arts at Ryerson University in the city of Toronto on the territory of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee and Wendat peoples, consisting of 22 full-time faculty members, has a solid and growing reputation for high-quality teaching and excellent, innovative, and socially-relevant research. The Department is strongly committed to equity, diversity and inclusion, social activism, and community-engaged teaching, learning, and research. Our undergraduate degree program offers a curriculum that highlights the study and practical application of research methods, classical and contemporary social theory, and themes of diversity, inequality and social justice, popular culture, media, and contemporary urban experience.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities will include: teaching and supervising at the undergraduate and graduate levels; contributing to the undergraduate and graduate programs including taking a lead role in curriculum development/expansion as appropriate; establishing and maintaining a strong, independent, externally-funded research agenda; and participating in the academic life of the Department of Sociology, the Faculty and the University.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have completed a PhD in Sociology or a related discipline (or expect to do so by July 2019). They will demonstrate an ability to contribute to both our undergraduate and graduate programs with evidence of high-quality teaching, a strong research profile and an emerging scholarly record, as well as the capacity for collegial service. The successful candidate must present strong emerging scholarly research or creative projects or works that are active, innovative and impactful resulting in achievements such as peer reviewed and community-oriented publications, working papers, book chapters, public policy contributions, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, strong endorsements/recommendations by referees of top international stature, studies, writings or creative productions disseminated by other suitable means and other noteworthy activities that contribute to the visibility and prominence of the discipline. Evidence of excellence in teaching must be provided through a teaching dossier that outlines the teaching philosophy, teaching accomplishments (including experience with course/curriculum review/development), excellent pedagogical practice, sample syllabi and teaching evaluations. Candidates must have a demonstrated commitment to upholding the values of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion as it pertains to service, teaching, and scholarly, research or creative activities.
