Tenure-Track Faculty Position in Experimental Sound Art/Sound Design

The School for the Contemporary Arts (SCA) at Simon Fraser University invites applications for a tenure-track position in Experimental Sound Art / Sound Design, at the Assistant Professor level, starting July 15, 2022. This position will bridge Music & Sound and Production & Design programs within the interdisciplinary context of the SCA.

We acknowledge the Squamish (Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw), Musqueam (xʷməθkʷəy̓əm), Tsleil-Waututh (səlil̓ w̓ətaʔɬ), Katzie, and Kwikwetlem (kʷikʷəƛ̓əm) peoples, on whose traditional territories Simon Fraser University’s three campuses stand. By recognizing the Traditional Coast Salish territories, we aspire to create space for reconciliation through dialogue and decolonizing practices.

The SCA, situated in downtown Vancouver, offers a unique curriculum in which studio classes are integrated with historical and theoretical study of the arts. This is grounded in attention to critical contemporary issues as well as our commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration both within the classroom and beyond. The SCA offers BFAs in Dance, Film, Music & Sound, Theatre & Performance, Production and Design, and Visual Art, a BA in Art, Performance and Cinema Studies as well as an interdisciplinary MFA, and a MA and PhD in Contemporary Arts.

Position Title and Rank: Assistant Professor in Experimental Sound Art / Sound Design

We seek an innovative artist with significant experience in experimental sound design and/or live performance design with an emphasis on one or more of the following areas:
● Live sound performance;
● Sound design for live performance;
● Immersive, multichannel sound environments and/or installations;
● Interactive environments and media.

The ideal candidate has a vibrant and recognized artistic practice that engages with contemporary aesthetic developments in the field of Sound Art / Sound Design and thrives in an interdisciplinary environment. They will have a practice working both collaboratively and independently within expanded definitions of performance and installation.

Candidate Qualifications
● A vibrant and continuing artistic practice in contemporary Sound Art / Sound Design;
● Capacity to teach and mentor across areas of experiential practice, context, process, and technique;
● Established interest and capability in self-sufficient production, making, and full life-cycle creation;
● Expected involvement in hands-on technical craft and production processes, and ability to work with modest resources and labour constraints;
● Ability to combine creative practice with critical enquiry into contemporary issues and to articulate these in a teaching context;
● Commitment to interdisciplinary curriculum development;
● MA, MFA, or PhD in a field or discipline of relevance.
● Problem-solving skills across a variety of environments, relations, and media;
● Interest in contributing to and/or leading initiatives that serve the mandate of the SCA and the University within local and international communities.

Candidate Assets
In addition to the above minimum requirements, candidates should consider any of the following to be assets for this position:
● Commitment to challenging Western training conventions and hierarchies of knowledge; interest and capability in working with an anti-racist and decolonial framework to develop coursework and production models;
● Experience exploring sustainable production practices and environmental focus;
● A history of effective team building and collaborating effectively in a complex environment.
● Competency with current software tools relevant to the field of expertise such as DAWs, programming languages, video media servers, and game engines;
● Competency with audio hardware such as system design, digital and analog audio mixers, live microphone techniques, live audio processing, synthesis, wearable technologies, microcontrollers and other small scale electronics;

Position Responsibilities
A normal academic load for tenure track faculty consists of 40% teaching, 40% research and 20% service;

Teaching:
● A normal academic year for tenure-track faculty in the School for the Contemporary Arts consists of two teaching semesters and a research semester. Typically a teaching semester is comprised of two courses;
● Hands-on supervision of student production roles and creative projects at the SCA outside of class time;
● Teaching and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students within and across programs at the SCA;

Research:
● Research at the School for The Contemporary Arts within SFU is defined as the generation of knowledge and innovation through artistic expression, experimentation, and/or scholarship;
● Research responsibilities require faculty to maintain a program of active artistic practice at local, national, and international levels outside of the university.

Service:
● The School is committed to an open, collegial, and inclusive style of governance based largely upon committee participation. Faculty typically sit on 2 committees per year.
● Additional contributions to initiatives and projects that serve the mandate of the programs and the SCA;
● Contribution to the advancement and growth of both the Music & Sound and the Production & Design programs of the school, assist in student recruitment, and curriculum development.

Candidates are asked to submit:
● a cover letter of application outlining creative and scholarly background, with an indication of citizenship and/or residency status (1-2 pages);
● a current curriculum vitae;
● a statement of teaching and mentorship philosophy, including your commitment to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) in the classroom studio and beyond (2 pages);
● links to 3-5 samples of creative works. Samples may include specific audio/video or photo documentation, published material, etc. Please provide URLs with brief descriptions of each submission;
● the names and email addresses for three confidential referees (letters of reference may be requested at a later date).
