Located in downtown Toronto, the largest and most culturally diverse city in Canada, and on the territory of the Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee and the Wendat Peoples, the Department of Philosophy in the Faculty of Arts at Toronto Metropolitan University [www.torontomu.ca] (formerly Ryerson University) invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor effective July 1st, 2025 (subject to final budgetary approval).

Area of Specialization: Epistemology

Areas of Competence: Open, but we have a strong preference for candidates who demonstrate willingness and ability to teach Critical Thinking.

Normally, candidates must hold a doctoral degree in Philosophy by the appointment date. Candidates who are all-but-dissertation (ABD), and who are able to demonstrate that they will be very close to completion by the appointment date, may also be considered.

The successful candidate will engage in a combination of teaching, scholarly, research, or creative activity, and service duties, while maintaining an inclusive, equitable, and collegial work environment across all activities.

Teaching duties will include teaching classes at undergraduate and graduate levels, and the supervision of graduate students. The standard teaching load is two courses in the Fall semester and two courses in the Winter semester.

The successful candidate will pursue a strong, innovative research program that produces cutting-edge, high-quality results.

The successful candidate will participate in the academic life of the Department of Philosophy, and will contribute to the wider university, profession, or community, through service activities.

Candidates must present evidence of the following:

Evidence of excellence may include: a robust research agenda; peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations in respected scholarly venues; strong letters of reference from well-established scholars; contributions to conference/symposia proceedings; book reviews; published reviews of the candidate’s work; other forms of scholarly expression, such as participation in public discourse and debate, and non-peer-reviewed publications which constitute a contribution to research; and awards, accolades, and other forms of recognition in the field.
