The Opportunity

The RTA School of Media in the Faculty of Communication and Design at Ryerson University (www.ryerson.ca) is pleased to invite applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of television and camera-based production. The appointment shall be effective August 1, 2019, subject to final budgetary approval.

Established in 1953 as the School of Radio & Television Arts, the RTA School of Media is a creative innovation hub of broadcasting, media, transmedia, gaming, interactive design, and hybrid mobile production. For the past two years RTA has been recognized by Hollywood Reporter magazine as one of the world’s top 15 media production schools. It offers three academically rigorous undergraduate programs in media production, new media, and sport media, as well as a graduate program in media production. RTA attracts and nurtures innovative, creative, and entrepreneurial students. Its faculty is a diverse mix of highly regarded creative practitioners, innovators, and researchers, all committed to the education of tomorrow’s industry leaders, thinkers, artists, storytellers and scholars. The faculty prides itself on the excellence of its production practice and research, and on the quality of its teaching.

Research and creative areas range from critical media theory and media production to experiential media, transmedia, interaction design and media entrepreneurship. We are interested in candidates that will contribute to our existing research and teaching strengths by bringing innovative and diverse perspectives and experiences to the school.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will engage in a combination of teaching, research and service duties.
The candidate will be expected to pursue an innovative and independent creative practice and /or research program that produces high-quality creative activity and/or research in the discipline.
The candidate will contribute to our undergraduate and graduate programs through teaching, mentoring and supervision of students.
The candidate will engage in maintaining an inclusive, equitable, and collegial work environment across all activities.

Qualifications

We are seeking a visionary television and camera-based production person who connects traditional and contemporary practices that span across various media platforms.

Candidates must have a Master’s degree in Communications, Media or a related field. Preference will be given to those with a PhD. Candidates must also demonstrate a legacy of professional practice in media production.

In addition, applicants must demonstrate:
• practical experience in television and other media production in at least two of the following areas: multi or single camera-based production (both preferred), directing, broadcast, production design, technical aspects of production, and/or cross-platform production processes;
• experience in traditional and innovative storytelling and distribution/dissemination across various media platforms;
• broad knowledge of media issues, best practices, industry challenges, and trends in production and media;
• an understanding of television and media production technology;
• a proven capacity to synthesize and critically reflect on production practices, issues and trends, and engage students in this regard;
• a prior track record of teaching excellence at the College or University level, and/or delivery of professional training and development;
• ability to supervise undergraduate and graduate students;
• a capacity to produce dynamic, focused creative work and /or research in the area of television, other media production and/or communications in general, resulting in the dissemination of outcomes;
• a demonstrated capacity for leadership;
• a willingness to become familiar with the curriculum and culture of the RTA School of Media and to commit to student wellbeing; as well as to equity, diversity, and inclusion in all aspects of the job; and to making learning accessible and inclusive for a diverse student population;
