Tier 1 CRC in Global Change to Freshwater Ecosystems

Trent University

The Department of Biology at Trent University invites applications from qualified candidates for a Tier I Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Global Change of Freshwater Ecosystems. The nominee would focus on global environmental change and how these changes affect biological systems across many scales — from the level of the individual organism, to populations, communities, and ecosystems. Applications are invited from exceptional researchers working broadly in the area of aquatic global change of freshwater ecosystems with research programs that complement existing strengths in Biology, as well as existing strengths at Trent as a whole, including in Trent’s School of the Environment and the Water Quality Center. Research foci of interest include, but are not limited to, anthropogenic influences such as urbanization, climate change, land-use changes, and invasive species on any aspect of contemporary freshwater ecosystems. Research topics would be broadly evaluated but could include biodiversity, nutrient cycling, primary production, and development of early warning systems in lakes and rivers. The position would be highly collaborative and the candidate is expected to contribute to and continue to help lead the institution on system-wide initiatives in water and environment. Tier 1 CRC nominees must be appointed as full professors who are “outstanding and innovative world-class researchers” recognized internationally through records of supervising and retaining high quality trainees and through a research program that is “innovative and of the highest quality”. A Tier 1 CRC should be an individual that is an active participant in, and provides leadership in cross-cutting university, local, and other national and international initiatives in new aquatic sustainability. The chairholder would advocate for freshwater research through publications, conferences and news releases and communicate with local, regional, and national decision makers.

Applicants should submit electronically a curriculum vitae, a copy of three of the applicant’s most influential publications, and a comprehensive Canada Research Chair vision statement of no longer than 10 pages that includes a specific, personal research plan, a statement of research contributions (including mentoring faculty and graduate students), a teaching philosophy (including your experiences in increasing equity, diversity, and inclusion in previous institutional environments, curriculum, and in supporting diverse students), and a plan for the development of externally funded strategic research projects and/or other programs appropriate to the field. Applications should also include a completed self-identification form and a list of three referees who may be contacted later in the process with the candidate’s permission.
