Position Profile:  The Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, at the University of Western Ontario invites applications for a Limited-Term faculty appointment with responsibilities in teaching, research and service.  The area of research is broadly defined as Corrosion and Materials Degradation/Performance as it relates to the nuclear industry.  Teaching at the introductory level and core chemistry courses is expected.  The appointment begins July 1, 2026 as a three-year, renewable Limited-Term position at rank of Assistant Professor with salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. 

Academic Expectations:  The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching within the chemistry program at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including mentorship of trainees.  They will also develop an independent, externally-funded research program in electrochemistry, material science and nuclear-related corrosion issues. This research will align with Western’s strategic focus on nuclear energy and bolster Western’s strong position in nuclear-related corrosion research.  The research area is expected to be complementary to existing research portfolios and contribute beneficially to the overall nuclear-related research ecosystem.  Consequently, this position should exploit funding opportunities and collaborations with both governmental agencies and industrial partnerships.  The position also requires a Service component that encompasses internal (University) and external (community and learned societies) components. These academic expectations reflect the Department’s strong commitment to excellence in teaching and impactful, meaningful research and engagement with industrial partners. 

Qualifications or Experience and Skills Required: The ideal candidate must hold a doctoral degree in Chemistry or a closely related field with postdoctoral experience or equivalent experience.  The successful candidate will have demonstrated technical expertise and practical experience in advanced electrochemical techniques for materials characterization within nuclear-related corrosion or material science and energy conversion research. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an independent research program and seek external funding.  Experience with, or demonstrated potential, for teaching courses at the university level, managing projects, and/or mentoring junior trainees in a laboratory environment is essential. Candidates must demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills and show evidence of contributing to equity, diversity, and inclusion within academic or professional settings. The Department of Chemistry (https://www.uwo.ca/chem/) is a research-intensive department in Western’s Faculty of Science (https://www.uwo.ca/sci/), with large undergraduate and graduate programs.
