Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream - Engineering Design

University of Toronto

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MIE) and the Division of Engineering Science (EngSci) in the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering at the University of Toronto invite applications for a full-time teaching stream position in engineering design. This will be a joint appointment between MIE (51%) and EngSci (49%). The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2027.

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must have earned a PhD degree in engineering or a related area by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching in engineering design. We seek candidates whose teaching interests complement and enhance our existing departmental strengths.

The successful candidate will be jointly appointed to the Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering (MIE) and the Division of Engineering Science (EngSci); however, a background in mechanical or industrial engineering is not required as the position considers engineering design broadly across all engineering disciplines aligned with EngSci’s nine interdisciplinary majors.

The successful candidate will teach introductory and advanced courses in these areas to undergraduate students in EngSci and beyond. Candidates must be registered, or eligible for registration, as a Professional Engineer. This is important as faculty members teaching design courses to undergraduate students must be Professional Engineers for program accreditation as set out by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board. For more information on registering as a Professional Engineer in Ontario, follow this link.

Candidates must have teaching experience in a degree-granting program, including lecture preparation and delivery, curriculum development, and development of online material/lectures. Additionally, candidates must possess a demonstrated commitment to excellent pedagogical inquiry and a demonstrated interest in teaching-related scholarly activities.

Evidence of excellence in teaching and a commitment to excellent pedagogical inquiry will be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, awards and accolades, presentations at significant conferences, the teaching dossier (including the required materials outlined below), and strong letters of reference.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will be assigned a teaching and service load with the following responsibilities:

  • Deliver an innovative, hands-on, theoretically grounded, rigorous engineering design curriculum.
  • Teach engineering design courses throughout the curriculum. Engineering Science program currently has three one-term, cornerstone design courses in the foundation curriculum (years 1 and 2) as well as capstone design courses in each of its nine Majors (years 3 and 4).
  • Redefine, reshape, and continuously improve the Engineering Science design curriculum, and hence, the candidate should be comfortable with a wide variety of design pedagogies, as demonstrated through the application materials.
  • Collaborate with other members of the faculty to blend engineering design education with communication and teamwork.
  • Serve as the Division’s representative on various faculty and divisional committee/s as required.

HIRING SALARY RANGE

The salary range is $125,000-$160,000 CAD per annum, depending on experience. Negotiations beyond this salary range will be considered for exceptionally qualified candidates.
