Qualifications
The Accounting Area seeks an effective and versatile educator who can contribute to the Area’s current and anticipated teaching needs. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated teaching effectiveness at the college or university level, the breadth and flexibility to teach a variety of accounting courses across different levels and programs, and relevant professional accounting, business, or industry experience that they can bring into the classroom. Candidates should also demonstrate a commitment to remaining current with developments in the accounting profession.
The successful candidate must hold a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation and, at a minimum, an MBA or a master’s degree in accounting, management, or a discipline directly related to the core subjects to be taught and demonstrate teaching experience aligned with the Beedie School of Business’ strategic priorities of innovation, social responsibility, and global perspective. This is a teaching-focused position, and the appointment and subsequent performance reviews will emphasize teaching and educational contributions. Research activity and scholarly publication are not expected as part of the role.
Duties
The successful candidate will be expected to teach eight course sections per year in the Accounting Area, covering a range of accounting topics at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels in line with the Area’s current and anticipated teaching needs.
In addition to teaching, the successful candidate will be expected to:
- deliver engaging, high-quality instruction that communicates accounting concepts clearly and integrates current professional practice into the classroom
- teach across different accounting courses, levels, and programs as the Area’s teaching needs evolve
- contribute to course design, curriculum development, and program activities in the Accounting Area
- support student engagement and mentorship
- participate collegially in Accounting Area activities and contribute to service within the Area, the Beedie School of Business, and the University
- foster connections with the accounting profession and the broader business community, where appropriate
Teaching faculty members are expected to contribute to the Beedie School of Business’ teaching excellence, actively participate in the school’s collegial self-governance, and offer assistance and guidance to students, peers, and the academic community through activities such as committee work, mentorship, and experiential learning opportunities.

A complete application must include:
- A cover letter that identifies the accounting courses you are qualified and willing to teach
- An up-to-date, full curriculum vitae
- A teaching dossier including teaching philosophy, evidence of teaching experience at the college/university level in accounting, prior syllabi, teaching evaluations (where available), and evidence of your commitment to improving your teaching practice
- A short teaching demonstration video (approximately two minutes) in which you explain or teach an accounting topic of your choice as you would to students; please provide a link to the video (e.g., YouTube, OneDrive, or Google Drive) that can be viewed without a password or login. Candidates invited to interview will be asked to complete a more substantive teaching demonstration
- Names and email addresses of three referees who are willing to provide reference letters in support of your application and can provide insight on your potential for teaching excellence in accounting. SFU will contact referees directly
- A statement outlining how your teaching, service, and/or scholarship of teaching and learning align with Beedie’s strategic priorities and vision
Faculty salaries at SFU are based on the salary scales bargained between the University and the SFU Faculty Association. A reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role at the Lecturer Rank is $98,340-$114,241, dependent on experience. Benefits are in addition to this range.
