The Department of Mathematics in the Faculty of Science at Simon Fraser University (SFU) invites applications for a full-time continuing teaching faculty position at the rank of Lecturer, starting as early as July 15, 2027.

Lecturers are integral members of the Faculty of Science and play an important role in advancing the University’s teaching mission. Their primary responsibilities are teaching and associated duties, including curriculum development, educational leadership, and administrative and service contributions. As members of our collegial academic community, continuing Lecturers participate in departmental, Faculty, and University governance in accordance with the SFU/SFUFA Collective Agreement and applicable University policies.

Lecturers may apply for promotion to Senior Lecturer and University Lecturer when requirements are met for each rank and are eligible to apply for paid study leave to support their professional development.

About the Department of Mathematics and SFU

The SFU Department of Mathematics is a leading mathematics department in Canada. We have a renowned group of teaching faculty as well as strong research groups in a variety of areas, including applied mathematics, discrete mathematics and combinatorics, mathematical biology, and number theory and algebraic geometry. The department offers a wide variety of courses, ranging from research-adjacent graduate courses to lower-division service courses and fundamentals of numeracy. Our faculty members have received 3M Teaching Fellowships and Sloan Research Fellowships, held Canada 150 and Eddie Goldenberg Research Chairs, and have been elected as fellows of the Canadian Mathematical Society and the Royal Society of Canada.

Key Responsibilities

In the Department of Mathematics, the normal annual teaching workload for a full-time Lecturer is 6 courses. Teaching assignments are determined in accordance with the department’s workload policy and the SFU/SFUFA Collective Agreement.

At least one semester in nine, a Lecturer will have no teaching duties assigned. For the purposes of this entitlement, the non-teaching semester is one in which the Lecturer would normally have taught at least two regular courses or their equivalent.

The responsibilities of the successful candidate will include:

• Preparing, teaching, and updating assigned undergraduate courses;
• Supervising and collaborating with teaching assistants associated with assigned courses;
• Contributing to course and curriculum development;
• Working with a team of other teaching and research faculty to ensure consistency of instruction and assessment across lower division courses;
• Maintaining currency in the discipline and engaging in relevant pedagogical and professional development;
• Contributing to educational leadership and initiatives that support effective and inclusive teaching and learning; and
• Undertaking administrative and service responsibilities assigned by the Chair in consultation with the Lecturer, which may include contributions to curriculum development, academic integrity, student recruitment and outreach, and departmental or University committees.

The Department uses a workshop, or learning-centre, model to support students in lower-division courses. Responsibilities of the successful candidate will also include coordination of a workshop and supervision and mentoring of teaching assistants affiliated with the workshop.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate is expected to possess the following qualifications.

The position requires a minimum of:

• A Master’s degree in mathematics or applied mathematics (a PhD will be considered an asset);
• Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching mathematics, including experience teaching large classes.
• Ability to teach a range of undergraduate mathematics courses and problem-solving strategies, including those relevant to the course FAN X99 – Foundations of Analytical and Quantitative Reasoning.
• Experience using technology in the classroom for the purposes of instruction and assessment;
• Dedication to creating an environment that supports diverse populations and perspectives, and a commitment to creating inclusive learning experiences.

The successful candidate should also have:

• Experience supervising and mentoring teaching assistants;
• Experience integrating the use of modern computational tools into lower division courses;
• Demonstrated interest in curriculum development;
• Demonstrated interest in the pedagogical enhancement and scholarship of teaching and learning initiatives;
• A vision for university education with proactive responses to the rapid growth in the usage and capabilities of artificial intelligence tools;
• A record of, or strong commitment to, service and collegial governance;
• Experience and/or demonstrated interest in working together with other faculty to maintain consistency of instruction and assessments; and
• Demonstrated interest in innovative STEM outreach activities.

Salary and Benefits

Faculty salaries at SFU are based on the salary scales bargained between the University and the SFU Faculty Association. A reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role at the Lecturer rank is $98,340 to $114,241 (dependent on experience).
