Limited Term Appointment in Social Work

The School of Social Work, St. Thomas University, invites applications for a 36-month limited-term appointment, to begin January 1, 2027, pending budgetary approval.

St. Thomas University is an undergraduate, liberal arts institution with a full-time enrolment of 1,600. Its students graduate with Bachelor of Arts, Applied Arts, Education, and Bachelor and Master level Social Work degrees.

The School of Social Work currently offers four social work programs: a BSW, a 1-year and 2-year MSW, and the Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqey Bachelor of Social Work Program (MWBSW). The primary objective of the BSW program is to facilitate student development to a beginning level of practice competence. Our MSW program aims to further student development as advanced structural social work practitioners. The Mi’kmaq/Wolastoqey program provides First Nations, Métis and Inuit individuals with an opportunity to pursue a social work education within a flexible and culturally relevant framework.

As a School of Social Work, we are committed to the teaching and development of a structural and critical social work perspective among faculty, students, staff, and the larger community. To achieve this, the School of Social Work has adopted an approach based on the values of openness, respect, collegiality, mutuality, accountability, and reconciliation. First, faculty endeavour to prepare students to practice structural social work by fostering critical thinking and critical self-reflection skills and by teaching the values, ethics, knowledge, and skills required to promote social justice within their practice. Second, we emphasize our responsibility as social workers to help people achieve their potential and to support the development of the social and material conditions that enable growth. Third, we understand that this can only occur within a context that seeks ecological justice and lifelong learning.

The School of Social Work is seeking applicants for a 36-month Limited Term Appointment.  Limited Term Appointments will teach 18-credit hours per year, with the possibility of teaching across all programs. The successful candidate will teach core courses such as: Theory for Social Work Practice, Group Work in Action, Generalist Social Work Practice Skills, Social Work in Health Care, and Research and Evaluation.

A PhD is preferred, but an MSW degree and five years of post-Master's professional social work experience shall be considered an appropriate qualification. The applicant should be eligible to register with the New Brunswick Association of Social Workers. Completed applications must include a letter of application that describes the applicant’s teaching experience and potential contributions to the program as specified in the qualifications listed above. The application must also include a curriculum vitae and a teaching dossier that provides evidence of teaching effectiveness, such as sample course syllabi, teaching evaluations, and a statement of teaching philosophy. Applicants should also arrange to have three letters of reference sent directly to Dr. Jenni Cammaert, Acting Director, School of Social Work, St. Thomas University at cammaert@stu.ca

Closing Date: November 13, 2026, at noon. Applicants are responsible for ensuring that their completed applications, including letters of reference, are received by this date.

St. Thomas University encourages applications from all qualified candidates and is committed to the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion, including employment equity for the following under-represented groups identified in the Canadian Employment Equity Act: women, Aboriginal* persons, members of visible minority groups and persons with disabilities. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given priority. Only short-listed candidates will be contacted.

St. Thomas University is situated on the traditional territory of the Wolastoqiyik, Wəlastəkewiyik / Maliseet whose ancestors along with the Mi’Kmaq / Mi’kmaw and Passamaquoddy / Peskotomuhkati Tribes / Nations signed Peace and Friendship Treaties with the British Crown in the 1700s.

*The School of Social Work recognizes that the term Aboriginal is outdated and not aligned with the self-determination and self-recognition principles and language of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission; however, it is the current language of our Collective Agreement. In the spirit of respect, decolonization, upholding the TRC, and supporting Indigenizing the academy, we invite applicants who identify as Indigenous.
